Best ball for toast? (Besides Plastic)
« on: May 06, 2005, 02:22:59 PM »
Need to pick up a ball for the toasty conditions along with something else for my B-day to help round out my arsenal. Right now my dry lane ball is a hex drilled label which can be too much for dryish conditions, but my only step down is plastic, and I lose a lot of carry(stupid white dot ) I was thinking maybe a trooper, or a crisis pearl. Maybe a barrage if I could find one. I've heard even the PG dry/R is great for the toasty stuff. Any recommendations for a good ball to fit under my Hex?

I've heard that a urethane ball is always good to have in the bag for conditions like that.

Yea, tell you the truth I think the new Heat might be to much, I've got a pretty slow speed with decent revs which makes dry conditions tough for me, and by the way read in your signature you'll be moving to O"fallon? You might run into me some time

On Edit: I was thinking Slay/r or slate gargoyle but really not sure, just want some input before I run out and buy something.

I think I got it down to three, the PG Dry/R, the Slate Blue Gargoyle, and The Trooper. I'm leaning more torwards the Dry/R but I've heard great things about the slate garygoyle. Any thoughts? Havn't ruled out the Slayr yet but I think it might be too close to my hex.

I've had good luck with the Barrage on toast and I've seen friends that do well with Power Groove Dry/R and the Crisis Pearl.

Tough to tell what your definition of dry is like, especially if you have slower speed you can probably get most toast balls to hook decently without much effort which puts you at a disadvantage...

I've had great success with the Roto-Grip sonic boom on light to dry, drilled pretty weak. It's very cheap, and hits just as hard as a high-end ball!

Slate Blue Gargoyle (pearl urethane) and Storm Big Hit (very mild cover and core).

I've heard the new Power Groove/Dry needs a LOT of dry, but I haven't seen one or tried one.

Disagree with
- Heat (too strong a cover and core)
- Crisis Pearl (Accu-Tread cover is NOT weak)
- Barrage (too early, like most pancake cores; high speed is good)
- Slay/R is not for dry without a LOT of speed.
- Sonic Boom (too strong a cover unless you have high speed)

Thanks guys, it's going to be the Dry/R or the Gargoyle most likely, havn't really looked at the big hit so I'll take a look at that. Thing that worries me most is my slower speed, I'm sure the balls mentioned are great for dry when you have speed 15+ but I am throwing 12-14. Also not the best at altering my rev rate, that needs work to...

Gargoyle will probably be my choice, we'll see I still have a week to decide.

Honestly I find there is nothing better than an older Faball Pearl Hammer.

My red pearl is a godsend for me on desert conditions. I have a slower ball speed as well so I man confident that a pearl urethane is a good choice for you

DO NOT get the "new" red pearl hammer. It's a pancake block & just doesn't roll the way the old hammers used to.

Someone suggested the slay/r. I have that ball as well. I can tell you from personal experience that it is too much ball on truly DRY conditions.

Once again thanks tons for the replys guys. I'm still rotting my brain between the gargoyle and the dry/R. I've got doubts about both, the urethane might pick up to early, and the dry/R might be too much off the dry. I also took a look at the red pearl hammer, but someone said it isn't good? I'll take your word for it. As for the desert heat...we all know how the "dry" heat turned out, that thing was a joke, worst Track ball ever IMO, I saw someone at the last state tournament I went to outhooking someone with an inferno using that ball. I know Track wants to make the better dry lane ball but come on....
