Best Ball Manufacturer
« on: June 13, 2004, 09:12:14 PM »
For the past 5 years I’ve been trying different companies trying to find that magic ball line that will work for me.

Ebonite, Track, Storm, lane 1, and for this year I’ll be using Dynothane.  One thing I’ve noticed is there is only about 5 pins difference in averages.

My conclusion is:

1.   No real difference between manufactures over the long run.
2.   I haven’t found the “magic” company yet.
3.   I just suck at this game.

Can't use Visionary, according to Gene Kanak, Visionary is for "smart" bowlers.  I'm looking for "lucky" equipment.

Sr. I thought there was something very interesting on PBA radio.  Del Ballard and another ball guy were talking during the TOC and both said the following, largely contradictory things: (1) For the most part, a bowling ball is a bowling ball, the companies all make a range of stuff...but, the difference in winning and not winning or being right at the top may well be finding something that "matches up" with your particular game.  In essence, I took the following from the remarks -- good bowlers can bowl with almost anything, but the match-up of bowler and reaction does make, on average a few pins difference.  Say it is only three pins per game...in a longer form tournament, that's a big difference.

Sr--How are you doing?  I guess you could call me a pretty brand loyal guy.  I have tried almost every company out there and I like Big B the best.  I don't care for Ebonite/Hammer, Storm makes pretty good equipment, Lane #1 over-priced Brunswick, Morich(ravage awaiting drilling), Roto-grip provides good stuff and good prices, and I haven't tried Visionary yet.

I would like to try another RG and maybe a Visionary.

I can agree with that statement.  If you aren't carrying and another is then you are screwed.  I've been there, done that as I am sure most of you have.  In general I think most people will find one or two companies that really suit them well.

I've also used----and currently use----equipment from different companies. To me,the drilling pattern and the shot you're using it on is the difference. Yes, some balls are better for some bowlers than other balls, but it comes down to experimentation, talking and working with your pro shop owner/driller,and PRACTICE!!!!!!!!
I loved the HPD I had,but after 4 yrs of use it finally gave up the ghost. I changed equipment and have found stuff I like with drilling patterns that give me the reaction that suits my eye----AND----gives me the ability to adjust and/or change balls.

I would say for the past two years my game has matched up very well to Storm equipment. In the past though I've bowled very well with Hammer and Ebonite product. Even threw a few 700's with Champions balls. So I think all companies have good equipment, in order to score you have to find what best matches your game. I think a variety is good and not necessarily sticking to one company, that is why I'm going to try Track equipment next and see how this works into my game...

One common attribute I found was the balls that worked best for me have diff of around .045.

Differentials around .060 to 080 take away most of my "tug" room.  Balls with .030 can't seem to recover enough when I miss right.

Just found out I'm not a stroker anymore, I'm leaning more towards the "Hoper" style.  Just fling it and "hope" for the best.

Got to agree with Bones on the XXXL, great spare and dry lane ball.

That is strange. I found that by using all Lane 1 Balls, that I could lower my bowling average 12-15 Pins this year.
