How to play PBA Experience?
« on: July 18, 2010, 08:51:17 AM »
I'll be bowling my first PBAX league in September, and I'm curious how to play each pattern and what balls to use. I'm a stroker, around 275-300 RPM, 15-16 MPH ball speed. If anyone has similar stats, I'd appreciate it if you could tell me the lines you play on the patterns and what type of balls you use. This is what I will have:

Invasion - 4" pin to PAP, pin under. MB 4.5" pin to PAP.
Prodigy - 4.5" pin to PAP, pin under.
Mutant Cell Pearl - 5" pin to PAP, pin over. MB 5" from PAP.
Wild Thing - 5.5" pin to PAP, pin over.
Tropical Heat Hybrid - 4" pin to PAP, pin under.
Backlash - 5" pin to PAP, pin under.
Plastic

I might have a Furious coming along with a 505C.

For me, i am able to play the gutter on the Cheetah,Viper, and Chameleon, the Scorpion I was able to play out there as well but a little more direct. and slower.
But for the Shark, the gutter is not an option. On the Sharp pattern I needed a ball with alot more friction, there is a lot of oil in this pattern.
Once you get your sport card you should recieve an instructional video, this has helped me alot

Good luck

strike, to really answer the question we'd need a bit more information.
-lane surface
-your axis tilt
-your axis rotation

there are significant differences in the way you play these patterns based on these variables.

as justdale mentioned, Shark is the only pattern that can rarely be played from the gutter. Typically you would want a ball with some surface, and a breakpoint thats inside 10. Cheetah plays decent inside on fresh, but IMO you're much better off playing it as direct as possible to break it down better. But get us the rest of these specs and maybe we can help more.

tough question.  Every house that i bowled the PBAx leagues, all the shots were different.  None of them played the same.  Blame it on the oil machine, the oil being used, the lane surface, heat/humidity and everything else.  Plus, lets face it, not everyone plays them correctly and because of this, they will not break down the same every week.  If bowl.com still has the video of Barnes and friends explaining all the patterns, I would take a look, but remember, this is only a guideline.  You will have to figure it out yourself, once you bowl and see how different your lanes might be compared to the actual PBA condition.  Just keep in mind, straighter is better.

Another point, rumor has it that USBC is not going to renew its contract with the PBA.  If so, not sure what USBC will do about PBAx leagues.  Might just be a name change, but we will have to wait to see.

Hard to give a specific tip. Just "be prepared", mostly mentally.

If you never played PBAX or a tough sport pattern before (or are just not used to), simply expect less room for error and more direct lines to the pocket.

You can check the oil graphs and see where you will have some area to target and play with. Also check the oil volumes - you won't necessarily have to start out with the strongest stuff in the bag, just because a ball won't move much. Rather play what the lane yields and do not insist on your standard game. Being open for adjustments and the ability to read the ball reaction is IMHO the biggest asset for success in this situation, esp. when you play a longer format.
