What I look for in a benchmark piece is good even hook, something smooth and predictable. Something where I can ball up, or ball down. Something to see what the lanes are telling me. It is generally the first thing out of your bag, and something you are comfortable with.

You perfectly described the Sigma Sting. There are other excellent benchmark balls noted here, but the Sting gets my vote.
