Going from Inserts to no inserts
« on: May 14, 2012, 08:57:45 PM »
Im looking at moving from inserts to no inserts.

Instead of plugging the fingers and re-drilling I was thinking about just getting finger slugs. I roll over my fingers when shooting spares so when we plug fingers on a ball it busts shortly after. Happens regardless of who I have had plug a ball.

Since my pro shop doesnt have them I was looking to order them.

What size would be the best?

31/32
1 1/8
1 1/4

thanks.

you could try using the  Ultimate or Master fast drying plug as well (kwik plug).  The color matching isn't the best but it will eliminate the cracking you keep having.

Get the size that fits the hole size that you have for your fingers. I am assuming this is 31/32. Install them with gel crazy glue, rout them down and redrill your finger holes :). You will find you get a better feel without grips. I've been gripless for years. Natural holes give you a better feel for how much grip pressure that's being exerted on the fingers. You also don't have to worry about losing a grip either. You will find also that your release is cleaner and will get a better read on the lane condition. Best of luck.

Im thinking about doing it to save money and I like the feel.

Its costing 15 to change grips. Or I can have this done for ~10 a hole and be done with it.

And I had forgotten what size the finger holes were drilled out for inserts. I was thinking 31/32 but wasnt sure.

I also didnt know if I might need to go up a size.

I tried no grips and found out that the grips actually reduced wear on my fingers. Also, my release was no cleaner without grips. It seems to be an individual bowlers thing.  It may work for you, it may not. After feeling pain that I never felt with grips, I went back to using them.

I definitely agree that it will vary from bowler to bowler.

I think getting the bevel right on the fingers is very important when not using grips.

to much or to little will cause issues.
