Best carry down ball out there?
« on: February 28, 2006, 01:13:44 PM »
I swear to god our lane guy doesn't touch the back ends throughout the season.  They have gradually been getting worse every week.  I notice that I can throw my Exception for maybe a game then I have to switch to my WoMB which is dulled down a bit.  It helps get me to the pocket a little better but I am lacking that "pop" I get in the first game and a half or so.  Any suggestions would be much appreciated.  By the way I have quite a bit of forward roll and above average revs and slightly above average speed if that helps.

I've found that the Ebonite Big One looks great on carry down. I don't personally have it, but I know a few people who do and from what I've seen, that ball pretty much ignores carry down. The great thing is, on a fresh shot, it seems to get through the heads really well too with an OOB surface. Great ball!

I also like my Storm X-Factor Trifecta at 500-grit abralon for carry down. Works pretty well, but the Big One looks better.

Hope this helps!

Sounds like you roll the ball similar to the way I do! I have a big One and it ignores most carrydown situations and has a heck of a backend pop!! I had an Xception at one point and it dosent take hardly any carrydown for that ball to screw up! BTW, for huge carrydwon situations, I have a Morich Seek and Destroy that I use but, it sounds like a Big One will be a GREAT ball for you! The Seek and Destroy just needs so much oil to work properly IMO. The Big One will be VERY versatile for you! I was amazed when I got mine! Easily the best ball I have ever thrown becasue it does well (actually GREAT) on all conditions except extreme conditions!

For me, the Track Havoc, but unfortunately they don't make them any more.

Why don't you just try a slightly higher grit level? Save some more energy for the backend. Also a slight bit more axis rotation to retain more down lane energy. I might agree on the ball choice but way too many people jump on the new ball wagon that could be fixed with slight adjustments. I know i used to be one. What about your deuce, slightly higher grit should fit above WMB.

My duece was stolen out of my friends car lol.  For carry down why would I want something with higher grit or more axis tilt?  I have enough problems with the ball scooting through the break point because of carry down.

There's your problem IMO. Not enough side roll to get a hard back end reaction to carry.

You probably have ball but don't have the right roll to score better.  It's not equipment but your technique that's holding you back.

I guess I'm not understand why you would want more side roll with alot of carrydown.  I understand that with stripped backends more sideroll would give you a bigger backend but with alot of carrydown wouldn't sideroll cause the ball to skid further through the carrydown and not react soon enough?

Kidjete is right on here.  Spinning the ball whether axis rotation or axis tilt, will promote length.  On longer patterns, you want to get the ball into a roll.  Carrydown my friends really isnt that different than bowling on a longer pattern.  What you want here, is a ball to get through the heads, have good midlane, with a strong continuous backend.  The Big One fits that description.  I have yet to really see anything roll remotely close to this monster.  It is a big hooker yet still controllable.  I think this is the answer to your problems.  Good luck to you and hope everything works out.

I agree...any of the strong mass bias balls with a touch of surface work great on carrydown.

The mass bias seems to make up for a lack of friction at o an extent when "strong" (referring to mass bias positions) are chosen).

Total Annhilation is a favorite of mine on carrydown!

PS my experiences on carrydown also show 16s seeming to carry MUCH better than anything else on carrydown.

Just in case you decide to read this...The DynoThane Pure Energy is one of the best balls available for combatting carrydown.

It has a low rg to get into a roll nice and early plus it has an 800 grit soaker/particle coverstock that positively chews through any sort of messy stuff down the lanes.

Nice smooth controllable backend as well.
