Best carry down ball out there?
« on: February 28, 2006, 01:13:44 PM »
I swear to god our lane guy doesn't touch the back ends throughout the season.  They have gradually been getting worse every week.  I notice that I can throw my Exception for maybe a game then I have to switch to my WoMB which is dulled down a bit.  It helps get me to the pocket a little better but I am lacking that "pop" I get in the first game and a half or so.  Any suggestions would be much appreciated.  By the way I have quite a bit of forward roll and above average revs and slightly above average speed if that helps.

I guess I'm not understand why you would want more side roll with alot of carrydown. I understand that with stripped backends more sideroll would give you a bigger backend but with alot of carrydown wouldn't sideroll cause the ball to skid further through the carrydown and not react soon enough?

My point is that if you are bowling on a lane condition with carry down then usually you are not bowling on a fresh condition.  Heads are going so you need some length and you ALSO need more back end reaction than you are getting with all your forward roll.  This is why I find more side roll works better than forward roll.  You get length thru heads that are going and better backend reaction.

If the lanes are not being maintained correctly then I'd find out why.  If you are bowling on heads that are going with carry down this is the normal situation.

Why everyone is always looking for a cure in a bowling ball is beyond me.

I guess i did not state clearly enough but I think Scott and JoeC are understanding it. Exception is a medium strength cover highly polished with good amount of flare. WMB is a stronger cover, decent flare and as stated is somewhat dulled down. He stated he can get to the pocket but not have consistant POP on the end (probably losing too much energy early especially with a forward release). Say the ball is at 800 grit why not try 1000 grit which get you through the heads cleaner but still give a consistant read of a sheen or dulled ball and somewhat delaying energy transfer. Also note I stated a touch more axis rotation and not tilt. A touch meaning maybe go from 25 degree axis to 45 degrees or O to 25 degrees. All these slight adjustments change the transfer of energy. Almost always someone pipes in on a new ball and yes they are correct it would fit the bill. I just see too many people jump to a new ball when they might be able to figure it out utilizing what they have. My $.03

P.S. - Why would you expect to get "pop" from a dulled ball like you were getting from a skid/snappy pearl? Not throwing stones just asking as the characteristics of both balls are not on the same plane.

The WoMB worked fairly well I guess I am just not used to seeing this much carry down at this particular house, which is why I commented about our lane guy.  The shot has changed since the first session and seems to be alot drier than it used to be which doesn't really make sense with the carrydown seeming to be worse.  Who knows I'll have to ask him what's going on.

lefty I meant pop at the pin deck not the break point.  Just seemed like the carry wasn't there.

also I'll try taking the WoMB to somewhere around 1000 grit and see what kinda look that gives me.

I have a buzzsaw gold nugget that i like when the backends soften. The shine gets through heads and the early rolling core allows it to ignore the carrydown. I personally go to more roll and play straighter. It makes me think low RG with higher differential might help. Just a thought.

Kid,

I understand what your saying. When you have more forward roll you burn energy early and using a duller ball it might be using soo much up that you don't get the carry. Being a high tracker my natural release is with less axis rotation and energy usage is very critical to my carry although my hook shape may look somewhat the same. Even directional sanding may aid in your issues. Post your experiences.
