Alot of people here swear by a Simple Green/Water solution. I know that 409 also works good.

The bathtub with water hot enough to put your hand in, and a 1/4 cup squirt of Dawn dishwashing liquid when Mr. White Dot is away golfing for the weekend

(NOTE:  I always fill the tub to completely submerge the ball in the tub).

Talk about a nasty dirt ring when I drain the water!

The orange-scented degreasers work really well.... better than 409...

simple green mixed with water and rubbing alchol works great by hand. If you have a spinner ebonite energizer ball cleaner is the best IMO
