How Is Your Local Representitive???
« on: October 19, 2004, 04:28:10 AM »
Is your local ABC/WIBC/YABA representitive worth a hoot?  Is he/she working to promote bowling?  Working in conjunction with propreitors to help fill houses?  Promotes your area/City tournament?

One other question for those in a larger local assoc.  Is this person in a paid position and is it a full-time or part-time position?

I'd like to compare with what we have here in Madison, WI.  Like to hear your experiences with your local assoc.

Thanks,
Scott

Yes, yes, I think so, and yes.

We are a large association (Lake County (IL) Bowling Association), but I don't know the answer to these questions.  If I remember, next time I see him, I'll ask.

Scott and Rick

I can help answer some of the questions for you.  I know that Tom Bertrand and Dario Frank cover your center (Hawthorn Lanes)  Both do an excellent job promoting the Lake county tournament which is the largest association tournament in the state.  (yes larger than both chicago metro's and elgin's combined)  A lot of that success goes to their efforts, that lake county board, and Ed Z (executive director).  I know for a fact that the only paid position on their board is the executive director position.  All other directors and officers are volunteers.  It is the same in the elgin, mchenry, dekalb, aurora, joliet, and chicago metro associations.  I have been in conventions, conferences, and seminars with all of these associations and I am familiar with their structures and finances.

I am a director in the local association. Every representitive in our association works hard to help bowling locally. Some work harder than others, but we all put in an effort which is better than what can be said of the people we had in the past.

We have one paid member and that is the secretary/treasurer, other than that we all work as volunteers.

I firmly believe that local associations are important and serve a great purpose. It is going to be a shame when the new USBC ends up getting rid of them.

just curious, where did you hear that USBC will get rid of local associations?  I have been to numerous conferences, seminars, and meetings and have never heard anything like that.  Combine at the local level to consolidate sanction processing and minimize expenses, but everything else will be basically unchanged.  There will always be a need for a house rep, local tournaments, and hall of fames.

It soyunds like your locals are pretty much akin to ours.

Another question.  Does your director the person that is in the paying position ...do the majority of the work?  By work, I mean go out and do the leg work, the PR, the one on one getting to know new bowlers and promote the sport or does he/she push that off on the volunteers <the good guys like your Excalibur, jimsey, etal>?

the executive director (paid position) is responsible for sanctioning paperwork, banking, accounting, communications, bill paying, and organizational requirements.  We cover 21 bowling centers in our area and the directors/volunteers are each assigned a center(s) to present awards, communicate with managers, league officers, and bowlers. We will visit leagues to see if bowlers have questions, inform them of rule changes, and discuss issues (like usbc, hall of fame, local tournament).  Most of the directors have a real love for bowling and take pride in helping in any way that they can.
