practice balls
« on: March 26, 2010, 03:04:09 AM »
Wondering if you guys use older balls to practice with.  I hate to wear out my new stuff for practice, and I like to practice alot.  Ws wondering if it is bad for my game because I have to bowl a little different with the new equipment.  The older stuff has lost alot if its reaction.  So what I am asking is for me to get better should I be using the equipment I bowl with in leagues and tournaments when I am practicing?

Is that why I have old balls?

Don't worry about it, it is something that we mere bowling mortals participate in.

Yeah buy stuff that lasts. All the reactions are about equal at this point. There are only so many things you can do with a bowling ball. I have 200+ games on 4 different balls. I only practice with the stuff I will be throwing. It just doesn't make sense to me to practice a line that I will probably never be playing because I don't have a ball that reacts like that in my line up anymore...

I use my new stuff,

IMO it makes no sense to practice with gear you won't be using when you bowl in leagues or tourney. Whats the sense of practicng at all? your look will totally different with different gear.

+1 here You can only exploit your equipment when you know what it does on varying lane conditions, so I use my normal equipment both in training and league/tournament. This also helps me settle down on an arsenal choice, which will normally end up in some classics.

Anyway, I frequently bring the "second" choice balls or older pieces to training, just to keep a feeling for these balls and to challenge myself with ball changes, because reading lanes and adapting to new lanes is one of my biggest problems in league, and this is quite a good method.

I agree with both.  Unless you are just practicing to keep the muscles warmed up, or working on timing or release issues, why bother using older equipment?

To me, the whole point of practice is to get familiar with your equipment and how it reacts.
