Best Sport Condition ball and drill pattern.
« on: September 21, 2004, 09:27:17 AM »
I am wanting to know what the best Sport Condition ball there is out right now. Also I was wanting to know what kind of drill pattern to use. I have medium revs and speed. I have tried a Sonic X and did not have the results I wanted. Any suggestions will be taken. Thank you.

Sport conditions place an emphasis on accuracy and consistancy on the bowler's part.  So, I would think having a ball and drill pattern that helps you with consistancy would be a start.  I would stay away from the more violent type of balls/drillings (skid-snap) and go for an arcing type of reaction.

However, there are many sport shot patterns out there and with different lane surfaces (age, surface material, wear, etc) and with the different bowler's styles, that introduces too many variables to give someone a 'buy this ball' type of answer.  Pick a ball that you currenly have that gives you a mild, arcing reaction and play with different lines with that ball.

Go out and practice your spare game/accuracy drills.  Making one or two more spares a game will do more than trying to throw more strikes on a sport shot.  A key to leaving yourself easy spares is to have the accuracy and control to keep the ball in play on your first shot.

What results were you expecting from your Sonic X?  What sport shot are they putting out for you?  What line were you trying to play?  What type of surface are your lanes?  Are you RH or LH?  Maybe someone else can make a specific recommendation for you with more information.

I've always had good results on everything except the longer patterns with a medium ball control drill.  Fav has been Erase-it, little polish, pin under the ring, cg kicked out maybe an inch, with a starting pin to cg distance 1.5-2 inches.

Joe, unfortunately there is no magic ball or layout for the sport-type lane conditions some of us are seeing today. Also, not all sport patterns are made to be the same, either. I can put out a particular pattern in a house with a Brunswick synthetic surface and get a look that makes me play deep inside with a weak ball, and see the same machine setting/pattern at a wood house and play outside with a dull reactive.

However, personally, I do enjoy drill patterns that take the core out of play and allow you to rely on the nature of the coverstock, your ball roll/axis, speed, etc. to create the numbers you'd like to see on the scoreboard.

I probably didn't help, but oh well. You can just wait for someone to tell you to stand at 40, throw it right with a Midnight Scorcher sanded down 220 at 23mph.

And oh yeah, all bowling balls are round, if yall didn't know.
