Best Symmetrical Core Balls
« on: January 16, 2010, 01:18:40 PM »
Okay, I've come to the conclusion that Symmetrical equipment hooks significantly more, and more consistently in terms of shot shape for my particular game. So, I was curious what are the best Symmetrical bowling balls out right now? I will be purchasing your suggestions on Buddiesproshop.com, so if you can limit your opinions to what they currently have in stock it would be greatly appreciated.

I will throw every manufacturer but Ebonite.

Thanks...

That's only because either your driller doesn't know how to drill asymmetric balls or you have not given the correct information about your release to your driller.

You're working from an incorrect premise. So you will never get a correct conclusion. Sorry.

Part of me wants to agree with you, but I can't. I have a good driller who doesn't argue with the ball companies info on their balls drill a Mo-Rich LER-RG for me, per my pap and Mo-Rich instructions. NOTHING, literally nothing.

After three full plug and re-drills( which all hooked for OTHER people), we gave up. My friends could throw it and make it hook, even though it as drilled with my specs, but it literally wouldn't hook for me, not any of the three drilling or any surface from 500ab to 2000 polish.

THAT ball absolutely was the worst match for me I've ever seen. Out of all the assymmetrics I've had, and Ive had several, only the XS and the TNV ever worked "correctly", while almost ALL symmetrics do. Weird.

I just don't seem to match up with hardly any assymmetric equipment while 99.9% of symmetrics do. WTF?

Considering the guys that have drilled my stuff over my entire bowling career that's pretty insulting. Plus, I have a little bit more personal experience on what works for me than you do. I appreciate that you think I might of missed something through my chosen ball drillers, but I assure you that isn't even remotely the issue.

Essentially, what I found at Kegel was that for me due to my revs and ball speed the ball is basically burning up in the front/middle parts of the lane, and basically has nothing left when it gets to the back. It hooks, but I don't get that amazing read off the spot that people that match up with asymmetrical balls get.

Sucks, because I would love to get the most out of balls like the Cell, Invasion, LevRG, and other great asymmetrics out there, but they just don't match up for me at all. To each his own.

So getting back to the topic, what are the best Symmetrical balls out right now that aren't labelled Ebonite?

Well I have the same problem when it comes asem, and sem cores.

The 2 best balls I have are the AMF Code, and the Storm Reign.
Since I have the Code I love the ball on a med. shot and the Reign when there is more oil.

Does it really matter? For me they are no different, other then having more information available for when I drill the ball. Every ball has a MB rather marked or not. Once you drill the ball it creates a MB.

I've had each hook just as much as one another. Cover and cover prep are the more important factor for whatever ball I look to drill in terms of its reaction.

I prefer a lot of the Brunswick equipment with the inferno core or the new Wild card or Wild thing.

I have had the same issue for a long time.  Any symmetric ball and I get a strong and consistent reaction every time.  I have tried drilling 2 high end balls in the past several years (Total NV and a Wild Ride).  Both did the same thing, hook/stop.  My Rattler ran ginormous circles around my Wild Ride.  Both had similar layouts, pin around 4 1/2, cg kicked out a tad and a small weight hole.  According to Mo Pinel himself, he said I needed to take a high end ball and drill it 80 x 2.5 x 50 and call it a day.  Havent tried it yet because with the leagues I am in this year, I have a set 3 ball arsenal I take with me and it does just fine (Trusty Green Gargoyle I have had for 9 years, Blue Vibe, and Rattler).

BTW....you roll the ball really well.  Timing may be a pinch late.  But overall, very nice.  As far as best symmetric stuff out there, you cant go wrong with the Ogre Series by Visionary.  The series consists of 5 balls and all are currently on the market (Urethane, 2 pearls, solid, particle).  If not, look at the Vibes by Hammer and the Freeze by Columbia.  Best out there for the price.

I think you can't go wrong with the Motiv GT1. It is a beast and does not fear larger amounts of oil if dulled a little. Other balls from the Motiv line would be good choices too. I would also think you would like the Storm Reign and agree that Brunswick balls with the Inferno core would be very good. I have also had trouble with asymmetrical cores. I recently purchased a Storm Virtual Energy and drilled it using a dual angle drilling. It's the best an asymmetrical has ever rolled for me but matching it's cover to a lane condition for a consistent reaction, has been a problem.

Yeah, I was actually very impressed with the Freeze and Noize series bowling balls. I was thinking of building an aresenal with a mix of Storm and Columbia. Reign of Fire, Hy-Road, Reign or Fast, Furious, Cool Noize, Freeze.

Look at the Nomad series from Roto Grip
and also the Mars if you want something less
the Mars is a little less overall hook than the Fast or the Furious and has a tamer back end reaction

Nomad series again is a little less overall hook and a little tamer on the backend than the Reign is

Both work very well for me
From your vids it looks like we have similar styles I think I might throw a little more ball than you do
and I really prefer the tamer back end reactions I get from Roto instead of the really hard back end motion I seem to get with all Storm products

It's a shame you won't throw Ebonite as they have the best sym. core out. Gamebreaker/Playmaker/Pinslasher core has been around for 15 years and is very proven in every cover it has been in.

Short of that I think Motive is putting out wonderful stuff. Don't be afraid to check them out, I think they're gonna end up being a player in the industry shortly.

The answer to your problem with burning up to early is drilling a ball to hook later. I had the same problem with trying to put average drillings on balls when I do not have an average release. I have found I can not get closer than 1 in above my fingers. I have a Cell with the pin 3 inches straight up from the bridge. For a long time I had the same problem as you until I started having longer drills put on. I would give it a try.

As far as sym. stuff, you can build a solid 4 ball line up from Roto. Nomad Solid, Nomad Pearl, Pluto, Mars. This will be workable for just about any condition you see except the really heavy stuff.

Take a look at Lane Masters balls.  All of their stuff is symmetrical and they have a variety of equipment for different lane conditions.

A great arsenal would be (IMHO):

Dynamic Power
Solid Strike or XS Power
Sure Strike
Hornet

They have high-end balls that would also fit the bill, but I'm of the opinion that Lane Masters' mid-priced balls are more than sufficient for most lane conditions and most bowlers.
