I was thinking about this the other day, but I was thinking maybe sanding the ball down to like 1k and then rubbing some oil onto the whole ball? We all know that when the shell of a ball dries out it will crack, well if you keep it moisturized, then it won't right?

I'd put it in a plastic bag (and a ball box with some added upholstery inside like newspapers) and store it in a dark and dry place with a constant temperature, not too cold.

Aside from keeping it at room temperatures, once it's been drilled, the BEST way to keep it from cracking is to take it out and use it once in awhile. The longer it sits, the better the chances are it may crack.

My ball rack is at the foot of our bed. I've had quite a few balls crack just sitting on it. It's temperature controled year 'round too.

I've heard the plastic bag theory before though. Might be something to it.

They don't like being bounced ....

Seriously -
Mine that in rotation sit in the open, on an old rug, on the basement cement floor all year round. Temp varies from 58 - 75 and humidity from 40 - 60%. I guess I'm lucky. Not one has cracked yet.
Older balls are in their original boxes in that plastic bag or a cloth bag. None of those have cracked yet either.
Those in current use sit in first floor "office" (computer desk) temp and humidity vary wildly. Still no cracking.

Given my "luck" so far, I don't understand the cracking issue with respect to the environment. I do know that extremes of temperature or hmidity affect the core, filler and coverstock differently. If they expand or compress too rapidly with respect to one another, the ball will crack.

I suspect cracking STILL has more to do with how the ball was drilled. I won't go over the details of those factors right now. Bad technique can cause stress in the cover and make it very susceptible to future cracking.

Your ball rack is at the foot of your bed?! AWESOME!!! I almost could get my wife to agree to that but that would be if MY bed was in another room lol. That woman is a keeper.
