Between the THS and scrub shot, what would you do?
« on: September 13, 2004, 03:57:18 PM »
I've already made a commitment to bowl another season with my father and his friends in our Tuesday night league (the scrub shot). My goal is to average 200 on this shot, but if the owner continues to treat the lanes as they've been furnished in weeks one and two, averaging 190 may be a more realistic goal. On Monday nights, I bowl in another industrial league with a team of higher rollers (at least 3 of the 4 are 215 average or better outside of me on this shot). If I make the right line changes as the shot breaks down, averaging 230 will not be that much of an issue as I know at least 15 others that will do the same in this league. I wouldn't doubt a 240 average played coming out of this league either.

My question is: what would you do to stay in focus in both houses? Especially since I bowl them on consecutive nights. What other forms of practice would you do in between to keep your game in check for tournaments? I have 2 other houses I could practice in, but both also tend to put out a walled, THS.

If I'm reading this correctly (and don't take this the wrong way), you are concerned about having to adjust from one shot to another on consecutive nights.  If nothing else, you will learn versatility and how to play different parts of the lane.  What do you think is going to happen when you travel for tournaments?  That they're going to put down your house shot and let you play the same target, angle, & ball?

PBA patterns change weekly.  There are 15 different patterns that PBA players face from week to week.  Last time I checked, they weren't concerned about having to switch from 1st arrow to 5th arrow from one week to the next.  Heck, Walter Ray changed from 2nd arrow to 6th arrow in consecutive games and shot back-to-back 279's in the process.

Stay with both houses; focus less on average and more on getting better, which is what will occur if you bowl in 2 houses with different patterns.

Matt...

I used to deal with two different scoring environments when going from Wed at T&C back when they were wood to Auburn on Thursday.  Staying focused in both house shouldn't really be an issue...I think it's more of a matter of getting emotionally ready for the various scoring conditions.  It's somewhat disheartening to go from a sub 600 night to a easier condition and not expect the previous night not to mentally effect your performance.

As far as keeping yourself ready for tournaments I believe that bowling on these various shots is a good way as long as you feel like you are executing correctly.  If something doesn't feel right regardless of the condition that you are bowling on you should be practicing to remedy the problem.  The only time that I could see a condition messing up your tournament performance is if you bowl on a very wet condition and slow your timing down.  This could mess up your tournament performance...but this doesn't sound like the case Matt.

Honestly, I wouldn't worry about it too much unless there is some kind of a negative impact you are noticing already
