Big Average or Big Games/Sets?
« on: September 23, 2003, 01:41:04 AM »
If you had you choice at a big average, 228 or higher, but no honor scores or a 205 average with a 300 game or an 800 series.

Which would you rather do?  I know some cats that only want the big games and if the first ball doesn't strike, they blow the game off and don't even try.  Those cats will have a low 200 average but will pop off a 300 every now and then and maybe even an 800 series.

Others will grind out every shot and make every spare and will average 220-230 even though they don't have any 300's or 800's for the year.

Which one of these bowlers do you want on your team or which one do you thing are the better bowlers?

My choice would be to grind out every shot. There is always room for improvement, and consistency is a key factor. You can't be consistent if you aren't willing to work on every shot.

At this point, I'd settle for either one.

I also agree with Bones. We have a guy on our team who avg. 196 last year, would shoot 720 one night, then back it up with 3 straight 550's. Unless everybody else is bowling good when he shoots 550, we lose a lot of points that night and dont fare well.

As far as which would I choose, last year I avg 203 with a 300 and several 700's (no 800 though). If going into a lot of high handicap tourney's (like 90% or 210/220), I would take the low avg. If scratch, then it doesnt matter if you avg 220 or 120, its scratch. Personally, I would take the 205 with a 300/800 night. For me that means I had one or 2 extremely good nights, a couple not so good nights, but for the most part shot right around 600-620 for a set. I always try to shoot good, never give up type of attitude, even if it is a grind (carrydown, lack of oil, bad carry). Give me the jewelry, I am still avg 200+.

How can anyone desire the "numbers" over the tangible trophies?  There have been several sports legends that have put up GREAT stats and titles (i.e. batting titles, rushing titles, sack leader, RBI leader, etc...), that have stated they would trade ALL of them for the RING.  Barry Bonds said it clearly, he would gladly give up the Home Run King title, for the World Series.  So the Answer is clearly the 205 average with honor scores to hold.  Afterall, when someone sees a bowler with a 230+ average, the first thing they want to know is how many 300s or 800s they have, and they would be shocked to see someone with that average, for years, and yet NO honor scores.

I disagree with most of you.  I'd take the 230 average over a couple of 3's anyday.  We've all seen low average bowlers shoot 3's or a person who gets hot every now and then and pops off a 300 even though they only average 200.

I think the person who could average 220-230 is a much better bowler and who doesn't have many hot/cold nights.  To average that high, you can't have very many bad sets.

This person shows that they can find the shot, repeat time after time and make spares.

I've set a goal this year to not have but 5 game under 200 all year in one league and to not have a set under 600.  If I can do that and average 220-230, I'll say I had a great year even if I don't have any honor scores.

One guy on my team is in the City and State Hall of Fame and had never had a 300 or an 800 but he was a consitant 210 average bowler for 30 years.

If you want to be known as a "One hit wonder" go ahead and take the 300.  I'm much more impressed with the person who can throw a few strikes and make spares and average 225.

Hi everyone. I would like to chime in here for a minute.
I bowled when I was younger and then quit for about 15
years. I started back bowling about 2 years ago. This question
really struck a nerve for me because I carried around 200
to 205 in all 4 leagues i was in during the fall, with some
pretty decent games and several 700's. The kicker is that
my dad and my brother used to bowl and both of them
carried about the same average as me, but they both got the
the ring candy that I don't have. Dad has several 300's and
brother has 300's and 800's. Needless to say it is a big,
fat, gigantic burr in my backside that I haven't achieved
these feats. To answer the question the long way around,
I would rather have a consistantly higher average, but once
just once it would be nice to have someone look down at my
finger and say " Is that what I think it is"? So that I
could look at them with my biggest possum eatin grin and say
" Yeppers, it sure is".

Hose,

In your original post, you NEVER said only one 3, and you also said 230 average, with NO, I repeat ZERO honor scores.  As for 1, 300, you did not say that, you said every now and then, which would indicate more than a few.  High average, with no HONOR scores is not as good as 200+ bowler who will, "now and then," "earn" their honor scores (plural).  That would be like Michael Jordan winning every individual scoring title, BUT the Bulls NEVER getting the Ring.

Given the choices I would take the 205 with the 300's.
NOrmally I would take the high avg, but seeing as the 205
is 10 pins over my avg I'll take it.

Seriously though I perfer the high avg, it shows consistancy.
