When did 300 rings become a joke to wear?
« on: March 04, 2005, 03:36:32 AM »
I'm not old enough to remember when a 300 ring was proudly worn like a badge of honor.  I hear stories that many of these guys were treated with respect for their accomplishment.  Now, I know of guys with multiple rings that don't ever wear any of them.  A teammate of mine has over (50) 300 games, but he admitted that he will never wear a ring.  When did this happen?

I've been around a few bowlers that wore multiple rings that virtually covered every finger.  This illicits 2 completely opposite responses.  Either others are very impressed by this or they laugh at them.  I fall into the laughter category because I'd bet money that I'd beat these guys 9 out of 10 times even before watching him bowl.  So far, I've never been wrong.

What do you think when you see a guy with rings covering his fingers?

My advice... like anything.  If you're proud of your accomplishment, no matter how common it may be to 'the big dawgs' sport it proudly.

The best I've bowled is like a 274 or something like that.  If I ever do get that 300 game I probably wont wear my ring, but thats not cause I'm not proud its because I have that 'nothign in my fnigers or pockets' thing going but I will happily put it near me for good luck.

It probably became a joke with "The Jesus" in "The Big Lebowski". You know our sport never gets respect. I wear my 300 ring once in a while to show the kids  coach. I am wearing State Champion ring because I just got it back from repair. It will go away in May after I wear it in the 2005 tournament.

i use to wear my 300 and 800 ring, but havent in a tleast 5 years.

I agree completely.

i use to think it was like a badge-or a man wearing gang colors-thats was before everyone in my league had one.

Won't wear one as its meaning is minimal. If it was a PBA or one from the ABC's like some "Kat" I have seen I might. Your assessment is pretty much spot on. I like seeing nummies with one or two. Best is when they throw it at you after you bust their stones about shooting 400 or less on a tough shot. 1 lesson learned though was "Duccckkkk"

Wear my 300 ring all the time and probably always will.  Remember the vast majority of bowlers do not have one.

I proudly wear a 300 ring. For my first 300 I chose a watch, thinking that at least a watch has some use.  I stupidly ordered watches for my 800 series and first 299 game.  I did get a ring for my second 300 and my second 299 ring I had promised to give to my wife, who wore it proudly ("cause it was a gift from me) until she passed away late last year. I kind of regret not getting the ring  for my 800 but when I wear the watch at least I know the time.

I wore mine till I got my second 300. Since I got my
3rd this year I started wearing it again. I now and then will wear the 299
ring. Just for a laugh. No choke I did it on purpose I wanted a 298. I will
get that one some time. 5 289 this year sooner or later I will get it.

I am currently wearing my ladies 300 ring AND my ladies 800 ring.
The ABC ones are in the display case.

I have the 300 ring but not the 800, and I wear it because for me it is my badge of bowling honor (also known as my 15 minutes of fame)

Hi guys/gals,

Thought this was a pretty cool topic to chime in on. I shot my first 300 last August (16 years to finally get it!). Although I didn't shoot it at home, it was at a house a few miles away from my house. I didn't receive the ring for a good 7 months, because of a goof up with the paperwork and I decided that I'd uprgrade it to gold since it was my first one. I received the ring and have worn it only once.

I shot a 299 in august of 2003 and have worn it a few times, the blue stone looks kinda cool. I'm pretty proud of my 800 ring that I earned last January and have only worn it 2-3 times from what I remember. They mostly sit in the china cabinet on display at home with family pictures and keepsakes.

What I'm most proud of is the 300 I just recently shot last week (2/24/05). On 2/14/05 my cousin Sharrie passed away from complications from cancer. She was only 24. The weird thing about this whole thing is, after my first 7 strikes, I started thinking of her. Each strike after the 7th, I would whisper to myself, "This one is for you Sharrie, 3 more to go...so on so on..." All of a sudden, the 300 didn't have anything to do with me anymore, it was about honoring my beloved fallen cousin. I never thought it would happen, but I was overcome with emotion and broke down after the last strike. I'm glad she came to visit, because that 300 was for her and when I get the chance to wear that ring, it will remind me of the short but sweet time she spent with us during our lifetime...
