Finger grips...
« on: April 14, 2005, 12:23:29 AM »
I am thinking about not using middle and ring finger inserts in my balls anymore.  What would be the pros and cons of switching?

I've been told that no-inserts is much harder on your fingertips since you're gripping with hard ball instead of softer rubber.  Also, you have to be very good with pitches or you can tear your hand up.

Imo, grips are harder on your fingers.  You tend (at least I do) to hang in them whereas without them you slide right out.  As for pitches, that cannot possibly be a problem for any semi-competent driller.  I'm with Jeffrevs here - go gripless, you'll never go back.

OK thanks Rags.  That's two votes for "gripless"

you shouldn't be "grabbing" the ball anyhow .....and Rags is right...any SEMI-competent driller should have your pitches correct...

But with inserts, how much work is put into really determining what the proper pitches should be?  There's significantly more room for error with inserts.

It may just be my experience with lousy drillers.  I don't recall ever being measured for finger pitches, just span.  The first ball I had drilled was done by a moron who screwed up the thumb twice.  Once I got the thumb fixed and comfortable, the other two balls I have were copied from that one or are second-gen copies of it, with hole sizes adjusted slightly.  Those other two were done by very good drillers and feel very good, but I've never been measured except that one time.

I'm going with a teammate to his driller next month and I may see about getting refitted then, just to see if my current equipment is "correct" or if it can be improved.

And in these days of "less is more" this is yet another reason to avoid grips.

I'm gripless.  WIth grips, I hung up like mad.  WIthout them, I have a cleaner release and like jeff said, now more revs.  About the pitches thing, it's true.  You feel the pitches more with a gripless ball, which is good I suppose.

No matter what, it's definitely worth a try.  No reason not to.  AFterall, if you hate gripless, your driller can just put in grips (assuming the bridge would allow).
