Big Willy Style a lefty?!?
« on: August 16, 2008, 07:34:13 PM »
Soo....Yeah....

I went to the ER today (Saturday), cause I hurt my arm at work yesterday. After a decent wait (less than an hour...which is awesome for an ER, and they had Olympics on TV), the doctor tells me that I have a torn Biceps muscle in my right arm. YES, the same right arm I bowl with. The same right arm I'm supposed to be starting 3 leagues in 2 weeks with. Doc said that it could take up to 2 months for it to heal! AYE CARUMBA! I'm terrible as it is when I constantly bowl, imagine me AFTER a few weeks off even. I wonder though, since I bowl so unconventional.....could I pick up bad habits or good habits from an extended stay on the DL?    Anyway, just had to vent, seeing as this hurts like a MF'er!

PS...anyone who has had to deal with a torn biceps muscle in their bowling arm (or other arm for that matter) please chime in, as I've dealt with a lot, but not this! Thanks in advance...

Never dealt with one,  but that's a painful injury and you don't need to screw around with it, because you can make it worse and you can create complications for yourself. Figure on sitting out 3 months just to be safe.

How did you do it, anyway?

Well, I believe that it started with me trying to bowl with a "normal" right-handed shot more-and-more. THEN, I went tubing down the Ichetucknee River (which consisted of me holding onto 8 tubes tied together, with my right hand, and guiding them through tree roots and whatnot for half the ride), THEN, I went bowling right after I got back: 1 game back-up, 1 game "normal", 1 game mixed...THEN, I was working (I'm a cashier at a grocery store) and I lifted a case of beer wrong...and that was the final straw!

Yeah....it sux all right! hope it ain't 3 months....that would be $240/month on nothing!

i havent had a torn bicep so cant tell you about that, but i am having surgery on my wrist.  i was in the same boat as you with upcoming leagues.  ive been toying around with lefty, and am not too bad at it....around 160avg.  but at least i still get to enjoy bowling while the wrist heals.  and if it heals while mid-season, the board of directors can vote on you changing back to right hand.  of course you would have to re-establish avg.

just make sure you let the arm heal 100% before going out bowling again.  i may take whole season off to let it heal properly.  besides, it will be interesting how i start/finish lefty.

I did the same thing about 10 years ago. It was about 4-6 weeks to heal. I remember it well, it was like you stuck a knife in my arm when i went to swing the ball. It's still a little tender from time to time. I can also relate to your $240.00 a month thought . I paid out $1335.00 last year to bowl 8 times due to my foot issue and CHF

Sorry to hear that, Big Willy.
YOur age, the severity of the tear and what you do in the meantime will govern how soo you can PROPERLY return.

Someone here posted the same injury about 4 or 5 months ago roughly. See if a search will show it up.

I can see you still working, but lifting anything heavier than about 5 pounds. Will they let you do that at work? I can see customers looking at you funny, (Assuming your a big guy as your id indicates) when you tell them you can pick up somehting unless you have your arm in a sling.

Good luck.

that sucks Big Willy, a torn bicep can hurt like a biotch. You're going to want to make sure it is fully healed before you try bowling full strength again, you dont want to risk tearing it again, or doing more damage and be out even longer.

Sorry to hear about the injury. If you do decide to go lefty, will you use the right side of the lane and right pocket?

Take the time to let it heal, I don't want you to have any excuses next year at The Gathering.

Thanks to everyone who has given me encouraging words...you don't know how much they really mean to me right now. I was only joking about actually bowling lefty, because if I show up to the Gathering next year able to throw 3 different types of shots, I think Ron Clifton mightquit coaching me! LOL! I'm hoping that it is only a month or so, but I am planning on coming back slowly (have Wednesdays covered for awhile...and Thursdays). I have been keeping it somewhat stretched, and keeping up with working on my range of motion slowly while I watch TV.

As for work, I'm still cashiering (is that even a word?), but I am on "light duty" which means that I can't lift anything heavier than 5lbs. Just means that I can't flex my macho muscles and pick up heavy stuff....gotta use the wimpy hand scanner!

Any of you guys that had the injury....what did y'all do to help with the healing process? The doc said to ice it and just lightly flex the arm to keep the range of motion ok...and I should start physical therapy in a few weeks....any other help would be appreciated.

I did ice my arm a few times a day, and after a week or so I did some light curls to work the bicep (light weights, 5-8lbs)

You'd better be bowling soon

I know you were just afraid to turn up at Tampa and not have 1800+ revs.

Willy, just get well. Maybe we'll see you when were up at Jax if youre not ready in time for Tampa.
Also anyone that knows Willy knows he already uses the easiest side of the lanes.
