Youth League Coaches...

Just curious, those of you that volunteer/coach/run a youth league, what kind of kick-backs does the house offer?  Free/discounted bowling, Pro-shop discounts, snack bar discounts?  Do you get paid? Nothing?

I get 5 free games for every day that I coach.  My son, who is in the Junior Bowling League, gets a special rate for practice games and free shoe rental.  Also get to attend a banquet for free at the end of the season.

I believe there is a fine line between volunteering and working.  I don't just coach, I collect/balance money, submit awards, hand out shoes, insert pre-bowling scores...etc.  The center has cut back employees for youth league because they don't have to do anything but enter in how much money we give them.  I agree with volunteering for the sake of volunteering, but to spend so little time actually coaching doesn't feel like volunteering.  I became certified out of pocket, and I don't even have any kids.  I guess I'd just like a little appreciation.

Two years ago (my last year as a youth bowler): The league director was a paid position, coaches / volunteers were not but received 90 games / month, $.50 coffee and drinks, half off other food items.

Last year (first year as a youth coach / director): paid positions removed, volunteers only, lower pricing on food items removed due to abuse of privilege, 90 games reduced to 45 with the caveat that games could only be used to perform coaching to kids outside of the league setting.

This year, I am not entirely sure, although it is safe to assume it is the same as last year. Does not matter much to me, the perks were certainly not the reason I went to the centre each week.

Nothing.  I ran a youth bowling program at a 10 lane center for 5 years.

I co-coached a youth hockey team Bantams and Midgest for 10 years and got nothing.

I coached a Little League team for 8 years.  Nothing.

Those efforts on my part were my volunteer community service work for my life.  Didn't expect anything for it and figure I am a better person for it. <I like kids.> Those that don't do any volunteer work during their lives are dregs to society in my twisted vision of how society functions.

Isn't it fun how a few idiots can ruin things for everyone?  At the previous center, coaches got as much free bowling as we wanted.  Until a couple coaches started bringing in friends and signing for all their games.  One guy was a Silver level coach who gave lessons on the side and none of his students (kids and adults) had to pay for lineage because he signed for them.  Most of us, would bowl MAYBE 10-15 games a week, but when you have a couple guys signing for 50-100 per week that privilage can dissappear in a hurry.  It got reduced to 3 per day after that.
