Biggest Flop Balls EVER
« on: March 02, 2005, 01:28:59 AM »
Saw the post on "Please bring these balls back"  couldn't help but think of one that needed to stay retired.

It was 1997(?) and I was stationed in Misawa, Japan. The ball was called "The Phantom" and had a Phantom Jet on the ball somewhere. I remember it was a doo-doo brown in color and a whole ton of hoopla surrounded getting it drilled (i.e., taking lane measurements on throws, blah, blah, blah.) I went with a friend who decided to get one of them and he paid full price. Needless to say, he'd have been better off tossing a cannonball down the lanes. My friend had bowled since he was seven and was throwing an original pirhana. He GAVE me the ball after just one week. I threw it into the ocean after bowling one league with it - Then again, I was still using two fingers and chucking the ball like those annoying middle school kids at the local Cosmic Bowl.

Somewhere off the coast of Japan lies the final resting place of "The Phantom"

Man,  with the money I spent on these 2 balls when they were new, I should've taken that cash, went to New York City, and have Madame Carnivora and her leather mask beat the tar out of me for the same price.

I hated:

1)  The original Attitude
2)  The Slate Blue Quantum

Two marshmallows,  Eeeeeecccccchhhhhhhh!!!!!!

This one is tough, because any ball can be great or terrible depending upon how it matches up to the bowler, conditions, etc. But with that said, I'll toss out a few lemons that I've come across:

Original Hammer Vicious--50 feet of skid, 10 feet of left turn, washout every time.

Storm Trauma Response--Looked aweful, rolled OK, hit like a wet sock. I only used it on the heaviest of soup but I still couldn't get it to retain enough energy to hit worth a damn.

Response to the post originator...the Crimson Phantom is still to this day one of the best dry lane urethane balls ever produced and can be found bringing very high $$$ in the right circles. YEs the ball was a nightmare to layout and drill but if you had a guy that knew what he was doing, man the ball was awesome. I still have one but don;t use it much as it is a 16# and I use 15.

FLop balls? Let's see....

1. AMF King Kobra, AMmo, Bone XS
2. Brunswick HPC
3. Storm Trauma Response and Fear Factor
4. Ebonite Primal Instinct
5. Track Triple Threat
6. RotoGrip Pure Fuel (nowhere close to the ball the Top Fuel was)
7. Hammer Syntactive Sledgehammer, 3-D Super Hook and Wheel

Columbia Tremor.  Way too over under.  I tried every grit finish imaginable on it and couldn't get any consistency in reaction.  Was really oil shy.  When it did hit the pocket, though, it was lights out.

To dougs answer i still have and love the Track Triple Threats great broken down head up the boards ball. I have shot many 220 plus games when others were lucky to shoot 170 on the same pair so to each his own.

In my case the Dynothane Anomoly was the worst ball i have ever bought but to Phils credit my vendettas and Thing Lives are some of the best i have ever owned also.

Bought one at Nationals (Reno) when they were new.  Used it in teams and shot about 650.  I don't think I ever shot over 600 with it after that.

I too have one and I love it.  I've also got a Mutant and it's been a great ball for me.  I guess that's Gene's point: Some balls work well for some people and awful for other.  One guy I bowl with had a Blueberry Buzzsaw and hated it; he sold it to a teammate who really likes it.

I am probaly the only person to say this but the Track Assasin was one for me it was wayyyyyy to over under and i could never see the break point. There was to much throw up color change for me to see when the ball was truly breaking.

Won $4400 in a tournament this year with The Deal.  Did you all rough the surface up like you're supposed to?

Burnswick Time Zone flopped for me...
