Biggest Flop Balls EVER
« on: March 02, 2005, 01:28:59 AM »
Saw the post on "Please bring these balls back"  couldn't help but think of one that needed to stay retired.

It was 1997(?) and I was stationed in Misawa, Japan. The ball was called "The Phantom" and had a Phantom Jet on the ball somewhere. I remember it was a doo-doo brown in color and a whole ton of hoopla surrounded getting it drilled (i.e., taking lane measurements on throws, blah, blah, blah.) I went with a friend who decided to get one of them and he paid full price. Needless to say, he'd have been better off tossing a cannonball down the lanes. My friend had bowled since he was seven and was throwing an original pirhana. He GAVE me the ball after just one week. I threw it into the ocean after bowling one league with it - Then again, I was still using two fingers and chucking the ball like those annoying middle school kids at the local Cosmic Bowl.

Somewhere off the coast of Japan lies the final resting place of "The Phantom"

The Navy Blue Phantom didn't work for me, but it could have been the wrong drilling. However, I've put the same drilling on other balls and it's worked. Who knows.....

How about the sea foam Contact Zone. I think that ball was a flop in sales and in performance---true definition of a flop.

I'm going to have to say the very first Zones.  2 came out, one was burgundy, one was like a black/brown pearl.  Both were total junk.  At least they got better after that!

I actually loved the Sea Foam Contact Zone.  The ball didn't last too long, but I was doing very well with it.

I hated the Trauma Response and the Hammer Switch Blade.  To me, both hit like marshmallows.

AMF XS Bone.  It was more of a novelty since it was bone (white) color.

Storm Trauma Response--Looked aweful, rolled OK, hit like a wet sock. I only used it on the heaviest of soup but I still couldn't get it to retain enough energy to hit worth a damn.

Actually i'd have to go with a hammer also, but i'll go with the first reactive hammer.  The navy blue reactive.  I had the blue, purple, and burgundy hammers then hammer decided to join the reactive revolution and made there first reactive, so i had to have it.  Biggest piece of junk i ever rolled.

I still use the reactive Navy Blue Hammer, but not for it's intended condition. I tried, but it never carried. It sat in my closet for a few years, then I re-drill it to go long and polish the hell out of it. I use it for dry conditions in pot games after leagues. When the lanes are completely toasted, this Hammer gets down the lane further than my Lane #1 Bullet does and it carries incredibly well.

The Hammer Diesel Particle Pearl was a disaster for me.

I think Hammer did away with The Deal too soon.  Many people who actually own it that I've talked to really like the ball.  I bought it and have no complaints.
