Title: Biggest hooking ball of all time???
Post by: BowlingDude300 on May 30, 2004, 04:05:06 AM
Which ball do you guys think is overall the biggest hooking ball of all time?  Don't include lane conditions or style either. Just flat out biggest hooking ball... I have not owned as many as most people on here but for me so far its the Cherry Bomb. A close second is my Savage Flip. What about everyone else?

Thanks in advance for replies. Kyle

I still don't think any ball will rev up sooner and hook more in overall boards than the original Super Cuda/C.  Ask anyone that's thrown it.  Just for kicks I layed out a flat 39 foot shot with 55 units(heavy oil accoring to BTM is about 45-50) and with a stacked leverage drill this ball was still too much for the condition and I had trouble keeping it right of the headpin.

Doesn't everyone realize that, as always, it depends on all the factors?

The greatest one after the bowler's release is a ball whose core has a fairly large RG differential plus the drilling.  For any given oil pattern, the ball's surface and the bowler's release, a strong drilling that allows the ball's RG differential to save the most flare for the backend will APPEAR to hook the most ...

The amount a ball hooks can be fun but it is the least conducive factor to good scoring except on a Wall or a House Shot.

In the PBA, oddly enough, every guy who has come out throwing a huge hook has not won consistently without taming down the huge backend that scored so well with on his "house shot". Yet, on the other hand, really straight bowlers, like Dave Traber, have not succeeded nearly as well as you'd think they would. Those who you see on TV throwing very straight, like Mika Kouvuniemei, Norm Duke and Steve jaros, ONLY threw it straight on the TV show.

Everything in moderation seem to be THE main key to real bowling scoring success.

Absolutely had to be the Columbia Yellow Dot!  No other ball ever changed the way bowling was played to that degree.  Never saw a ball go through the 3-10 split missing both before the Yellow Dot.  Never saw a ball chop the three pin out of a rack before the Yellow Dot.  Even with all the hype about reactive this, proactive that, the overall change from one ball to another is not as large.  That ball was something else.  You could cover all the boards you wanted and have much more speed than the previous balls while doing it.  What ball now can say that?

Every reactive or particle ball that comes out of the box is made to hook like a mofo, for awhile.  Then, carelessness on the bowlers part leads to the ball soaking up oil, and then they come here and complain about how the ball is dead.  The ball that hooks the most, out of the box, drilled stacked, would either be the Killer Instinct, and in my opinion the pearl one, and/or the Super Carbide Bomb.  I haven't had the chance to throw the Animal, and I would like to give the Phenom a fighting chance too, but another ball that just seems to out hook them all has to be that new Maxim, I mean Ebonite really worked their tails off to come up with those colors...whew....hats off to the Ebonite crew.

That is too hard of a question to answer...  It has to be relative to what was already on the market at the time of the individual balls release.  I may be a little biased, but when the Sumo came out, it out hooked everything on the market by a ton.  In todays market it would hook very little, but back in the day it was a monster.

Concur with Splitz...the Yellow Dot (bleeder) was the biggest hooking over its competition when it came out.

The question is not which ball out hooked the competition.  Of ALL TIME, which ball hooks the most?  It obviously isn't the sumo, you said so.  As of today, it hooks a little.  Then why did you answer the question with that?  The answer to this question is going to be a current or semi-current ball because they're just better than anything ever made.  Sumos were good when they came out, but they suck now, so they're not the biggest hooking ball of ALL TIME.

Depending on the era a couple come to mind:

AMF RPM Formula 4 - flared the whole ball and hooked!!
AMF Angle Evoution Tour
Ebonite Black Omega

Original batch of "soft" Blue Hammers - they were lighter in color made in 88 & 89 - Baltimore.  They hooked!!

Red Pearl Hammer - short oil days this thing came back from anywhere!!

to me it would have been the quantum violent hook.

My response was that the question isn't important...  Obviously one of the balls in the last 3 months in the hookingist of all time...  So a better question is which hooked the most when it came out compared to everything else.  Look at my profile, I think I have slight understanding of ball reaction.  Also, there is no such thing as the hookingist ball of all time...  You must really consider the pattern being bowled too.  It is fun to talk about though....

Super Carbide Bomb has a 57 hook rating, largest ever at BTM.

MoRich -- I did look at your profile, and it doesn't tell me much.  Has something been lost?  --  JohnP

I see this question asked in various places and the answer is always the same.  Not to offend, but what conceivable difference does it make?  As Charlest so wisely pointed out, it depends on so many factors as to be virtually incalculable.  Plus, I doubt if very many of us have ever run into the condition where we would use this ball.  As others have suggested, while it is not the intent of your question, I think what may be important is what is/was the biggest hooker in contrast with its contemporaries.  This has relevance because of the influence it might have on the following "generation" of bowling balls.  As an aside, if it's of any importance, I've seen people who can hook a target zone off the lane, so maybe it's a question of what ball in your hand is the biggest hooker.
