Biggest Hooking Ball
« on: September 26, 2011, 01:56:28 AM »
I was practicing last week. Guy next to me was talking to me about when he goes to the pro shop he tells them to get him the biggest hooking ball out there. His reasoning is because he doesn't put a lot of revs on the ball.

So he is trying to throw a dull hook monster on lanes that I use a Polished Urethane. He seemd frustrated with his bowling. He was hitting the pocket okay, but there was just nothing left in the ball.

When this person tells you they are thinking of buying another ball, and ask you for advice. What do you tell them?

Difference is you told him and tried. If he wants a ball to hook the entire lane, then you lay it out to hook the lane. I am sure he will not blame you if he can not use it when the wall of china is on fire

Those that can do. Those that can't complain. Pimpin ain't easy, but it's mandatory.

Disagree with your perspective. Pro shop can drill the ball perfect, explain what the ball is designed to do perfectly, explain lane conditions, etc., but the pro shop can't stop a bowler from blaming the pro shop when the bowler can't execute, has an inflated opinion of their game, and doesn't fully understand because they don't listen too well ( why should the bowler listen, hell he / she already is a great bowler in their own mind and why shouldn't the bowler think that after all the bowler averages 2?? on a THS, and can hook the whole lane and has shot several honor scores and and and and and..)

"Why would you expect the averae bowler to understand cover and layout dynamics?" The average bowler doesn't need  a physics degree, just a general knowledge of  layouts and a general understanding of  cover stocks. They should know the basics..pin up, pin down layouts & symm , assym, & polish, sanded. soild, pearl, hybrid.

Its for the love of money.

I will agree that some ball hook allot more than others but it depends on the lane condition and your throwing style...  If the lane is crispy a tropical storm looks extremly strong but if you put some oil on the lane it will only move a few boards...  The buyer needed to be educated or the proshop dude should have watched the dude throw the ball but I would have taken his money and ran...  would have found the most expensive ball and gave it 2 him...  :-)

When some customers say they want a lot of hook what they really mean is they want a ball that will go long and have a big back end.  If you lay it out to hook early they're going to be disappointed.  --  JohnP

What many bowlers need a ball to do and what they tell the pro shop the ball needs to do,OFTEN aren't the same. And what they say the ball is doing is OFTEN not the case. So there can be a break down in communication, not that the pro shop operator has purposely mislead the bowler.
