Bionic wrists.... Your opinion....
« on: July 12, 2009, 03:10:56 AM »
You know, the Mongoose, Pro Release and others of the like.

I started using one at the suggestion of my coach.  Throw 3 games with it, 3 games without it in an effort to help me maintain proper form.

Let me say that I don't really concern myself with the negative and uneducated opinions of others (bowlers).

While I was using it, I noticed that the games I threw with it I averaged 220.  The games without it, 200.

While I was practicing, some other bowlers started next to me.  No one I knew personally but I have seen them bowl on the leagues.

Out of the blue, one guy says, "Why are you using that b!tch wrist?"  LOL

I looked at him and said, I can beat you with it or without it.

You know what?  I just lost my train of thought.  LOL.  I've been on pain killers the past 2 weeks and I cannot remember how to finish this.

Happy Sunday.

At the end of the day it is the end score that counts.

I use to get hasseled about using one when I first starting using it 15 years ago. All I did was ignored the comments and do what I do best, giving them a run for their money.  One positive thing about it was that it really stengthen my wrist being that I was a skinny guy with not alot of revs but tons of speed.

Then I stopped using a metal brace and went to using a glove for 10 years until a recent wrist injury prompting me to use a Robby Rev brace this summer. It did take some getting use to since it did slow down my ball speed abit but it's keeps my wrist and hand stabilized without bending it and adding more stress to the muscles. And lately, I have been shooting higher scores with it.
When I practice I go about 3-4 games with it when I use my NVD or Solaris and once the lanes starts to open up then use my glove for more speed.

I would say keep doing what you're doing, it's all about the scores.

Sorry about the abrupt ending to my initial post.  The meds are kinda strong and hit in waves.  LOL.

I didn't even bother to bowl the joker who made the comment.  I was about to when he said, "Pro bowlers don't wear b!tch wrists."  I just laughed.

Mike Scroggins.  He had no idea who Scroggy was..

I just left him alone and kept bowling.

I found that the Mongoose is more comfortable.

All I have to say is they are approved to be used and you have to use what you're comfortable with. I used one and stopped, but started using one over a month ago to help my wrist. I bowl a lot of games and as you get older you have to do what you can to stay in the game. He has the choice to use one or not and if he chooses not to use one, but he shouldn't knock the one's who do! To each his own! It's your game, do what makes it the best it can be!

Ditto. There are too many reasons to go into as to why you might use one or stay away from them. It's one of those truly personal things in bowling.

For anyone considering trying out a Robo, one thing I would recommend is to completely understand your reasoning. Understand what you're trying to accomplish, and be sure you've done everything you can (coaching, etc.) to accomplish your goals without one.

In my experience, I've seen a number of bowlers go to a heavy brace without developing a complete game first. They look at the brace as a magic bullet in an attempt to become a good bowler over night. Once you take the plunge and the brace becomes part of your game, it's like smoking -- very difficult to give up later. Be sure it's the direction you need to take.

for training like you said I think they can help.as an aid if you need it I think they also help.my opinion is learn what you can from it and then put it away if you dont need it for physical problems. you would be way ahead of the game to not use one and develop different wrist positions and releases, hard to do with a brace.

EARL ANTHONY
arguably the best bowler ever wore one.
i am considering getting one to keep my release consistent as i have a tendancy to get lazy and break my wrist back during the backswing

Although I don't consider it a "bionic wrist", I use the Mongoose Equalizer (shorter than the Lifter) whenever I start getting sloppy. It cures me almost immediately.

No, I don't have weak wrists or forearms. I work out 5-6 times a week. I just use it to help discipline my release when needed.

Good luck to you. My advice is to find something as small as possible that will help you accomplish your goal.

I am completely against them unless you NEED them, or use it for practice.

I cant stand people that just throw on a brace without any actual purpose of it other than "it increases my rev rate".  I also cannot use them comfortably, they tend to pull me out of the ball VERY early.

I say if it helps you, and alleviates some pain, wear it.  Who cares if people make fun of it, beat them on the lanes & make em shut up.

I don't care what their opinions are.  Scroggy is a PBA champ.  That's all that counts in my book.

The one Earl wore wasn't one of the "bionic" ones. The ones that are "bionic" are like these. Brunswick PowrKoil,Moro Design Pro Release,Robbys Revs,Storm Gadget, and Team Cobra Cobra III. Those type that give you multiple adjustments by having dials, hinges and the like are the "robo wrist devices". If someone has a weak wrist, wrist injury, tendonitis, arthritis, or any other number of things that they need something to help take stress off of whatever it is wrong then no problem from me.

Why should you not wear something like the Pro Release? Is does not restrict wrist position changes as mentioned earlier if anything it aides in learning different wrist angles and different amounts of cupping. It also helps to keep your wrist solid and reminds you of form breaks. It can also protect you from future wrist injuries. Why not do those things?-Because some other person thinks you shouldn't!!

Well said. I used to wear one, also due to an injury, and hated it - but it was effective to keep my wrist intact! With a medical indication, I do not see any issue. A brace can also help beginners with a weak wrist. To some players it is also a mental consolation to have this extra support.

BUT: you have to learn how to play with it. It is NOT a buyable/cheap/quick remedy for release flaws - and I think some players think that they can buy extra revs, and everything will become better over night without effort and training.
A wrist support changes your game - and you have to learn how to "use" it properly.
