Black Tape
« on: July 03, 2009, 05:47:00 PM »
Do some brands make their black tape really thin and others make their's just like white tape?  I'm pretty sure it was Ebonite's that I've seen come thicker and rigid, does everyone else make their's really thin and flexible?

I wish they would make it thick and flexible.. most of the companies have gone to a thicker and stiffer black tape.. thicker cause I think everyone likes that you don't need 2 to 3 times more than the white tape to take up the same space..

but with the thicker come stiffer.. I don't like this as the stiffness actually pulls the tape away from adhering to the hole..

I know ebonite and vise are thicker.. maybe brunswick and master are still thin

Not sure about Brunswick, although someone made a post on here quite a while ago about how they ended up with the really thin kind from them, but I know Master makes it thin because I recently borrowed a piece from a buddy.  There's also Storm and AMF to consider.

It's hard to tell from the pics you see online because you say the Vise is thicker but they appear really thin just from the pics.  The main reason I knew Ebonite was thicker is because I tried it once, and in the advertising it says double thickness.

I do agree that it would be better if it wasn't ever thick so it would stick better.  If the reason it doesn't stick as well is because its stiffness won't allow it to fit the shape of the hole, I would think a smaller size tape would help.

Master is really thin, but once it's in the hole I can't get it out without a blowtorch. It seems to become one with the ball. I've even used a bevel sander before and couldn't grind it all out.

If you're looking for something really slick, skip the black tape anyway. Vise makes a teflon tape that is the color of a Band-Aid. It's expensive as heck but it works and if you need it to come out, it comes out.

Jess, you're right about that Master tape!  When I used it I applied two pieces, one on top of the other.  I can't remember if the top piece was that difficult to remove, but I had to use my mini screwdriver(my tape insert tool) to remove the piece stuck to the hole itself.  I figure it'd be easier to remove if it was on top of white tape if I go that route.

The purpose of me using black tape would be if I have to put white tape in the back in order to avoid putting too much in front.  I've thought of that Vise tape you're talking about, it's the TA-1C or something similar.  I'm not saying it's not an option, but since they're more expensive, I'd really want to make sure I get the right amount of white tape under it(so I can just add and remove tape in the front without it being too much).  Thanks for bringing that up.

Out of curiosity, do you use anything besides white tape in your thumbe hole?

I occasionally use a piece of that Teflon stuff. If I use black tape, I put a piece of white tape under it, then black on top so I can get it out. But I haven't done that in a while.

I've tried Vise's other specialty tapes and the two really tacky ones should be great for crankers who want to stay in the ball for a week, but I didn't like them.

I keep some Magic Carpet around just in case I ream out the hole too big when I'm working it out during a tournament and need to close up the hole without using a box full of tape. I really like MC  but I can't bowl unless I squeeze just slightly, and that doesn't work with MC -- especially if I'm going hard and straight at a spare and all of a sudden hang up a little bit.

I also use some of the Ebonite tape on my thumb, the Hada-like stuff, typically in the fall and spring just as the weather begins to change. I can get the hole a little snug, then add a piece of the thumb tape and it will allow me to get out reasonably clean.

I use nothing but the Ebonite tape, white and black. The black is thicker, IMO, than the others and if you try this, it's not as stiff.

I cut off a couple pieces before I leave the house to bowl. Put them in my back pocket. By the time I get there, balls out etc, the tape is warm, easier to work with, more flexible. It will curve, mold whatever you wish to call it to the hole.

My thumb swells then after several frames it shrinks then about 5th frame 3d game starts to swell again so I'm taking out, putting in tape most of the night. I found that putting the tape in my back pocket it will warm a bot, easier to 'mold' to the hole.

Might work for you.

PS: If you are looking for a 'tiny sliver' of tape, try the Franken Tape from

from what I remember:

master - super thin. glue is like others have said... its like after it sees the heat from your hand it bonds to your thumb hole. but for me its just WAY too thin to adjust the size of the hole.

ebonite - nice and thick. its all that I use. I prefer the 3/4 inch size.

valentinos - similar to master tape but just a tiny bit thicker, easier to apply, and doesnt get stuck in the thumb. its a good product but i tend to like thicker tape myself.

brunswick.... dont really remember what it was like. but i think it was on the thin side.

IMO ebonite and valentinos are the best in terms of how well its made.

vise recently recalled all of their black tape.. I think for this reason.. the stiffness of the tape and the lack of adhesion wouldn't allow the tape to stay stuck

A few years ago SLSM Designs wanted to purchase a well known accessories manufacture.  The company marketed tape and like most people we thought that they made the tape.  The fact was that they purchased the tape from a source and installed it into blown plastic boxes with their name on it.  What they wanted to sell was the the name of the source of the tape and the molds to make the boxes.  We thought it over and said why would you do that.  We could buy baggies and label them and then find our own source for the tape.  There are several tape distributors out there that sell to companies.  3M is an example.  Tape suppliers buy tape from manufactures and then market it.  They also change the sources from time to time and thickness may vary.

Valentino is the thinnest I've seen. Its excellent to create a smooth release without affecting thumb hole size. I use Brunswick black if I start losing the ball.

I use gobs of Valentino's Frankentape during a season.  I have problems with my thumb changing sizes during the week, but mostly on the side (I have a flatter shaped thumb, far from round!).  I use Frankentape on the sides and back to basically reshape the thumbhole as necessary since it's so thin and durable, and then use one to two pieces of white tape on the side facing the grip center/fingers for the tacky, textured feel.

If your looking for black tape that is like the tape we used when Bowler's Tape first came out then buy Brunswick. I do not like the thicker stuff and the AMF - Bowler's tape now leaves a lot of residue behind. Brunswick black tape is the tape we all remember. END OF STORY! Valentino Franken tape is good stuff but very thin. It is not designed to make the hole smaller. It is more for making sure you get a clean release.
