Blister Problem
« on: July 27, 2013, 05:02:27 PM »
What is the likely cause of a left handed bowler having a blister on the back of his thumb slightly above the knuckle and to the inside towards his ring finger.

If it was on the knuckle I would say he was grabbing with his thumb, but this is not the case.

Any reccomended adjustments?

Is there a slug in the thumb?  If so, maybe too much reverse pitch or span too long or maybe hole too big resulting in a bent thumb. Sorry guessing off top of my head.

A blister is caused by a rubbing at the point just below that of the blister formation. I'd suspect that the angle of the thumb's widest point in the thumb hole/insert/slug does not match the actual angle of bowler's thumb. It's rubbing where it ought not to rub.

The insert is at 40 degrees, while the bowler's thumb angle is at 45 degrees, roughly, more or less.

I'm thinking the thumb might need to have a slight pitch adjustment.  That was an issue  with a couple of balls in the past when I tried a different pro shop.  Since that shop didn't want to deal with it, I found a new shop by word of mouth and haven't looked back since.

The fix was to be completely refit, plug/redrill the thumb with less reverse pitch, and to slightly shorten the span.   The results are that I'm not prone to tearing my thumb anymore, and I no longer grab at the bottom.
