Blister question.
« on: January 02, 2004, 02:16:24 AM »
I keep getting a knot or blister on the knuckle of my thumb.  I've tried playing with different pitches, but to no avail.  So I'm wondering if any of you use those Master protective strips.  If so, do they work?  Maybe you have a different suggestion for me.  If I go to a tournament and bowl 12 games or so, my thumb is tore open and bleeding.  HELP!!

Yeah, I use thumb slugs in my stuff.  I wonder if I just have too much reverse pitch?

If it is on the top of the thumb then your thumb hole is too large and you are bending your thumb. Use bowlers tape to tighten up the hole to where you can not bend your thumb.

If you then start to drop the ball you have too much reverse in the thumb.

Yes, those Master protective patches work GREAT!
BUT
pinbuster is probably right: your thumb hole is not right.

Since you're one of those 220 average bowlers, has this not happened before? has your hand changed recently? lose some weight maybe?
My fingers/thumb/hand shrink something terrible in the winter, not so much from the cold but from the reduced humidity. Some years I even change my thumb inserts to one size smaller. In fact thinking of doing that right now.

Thanks charlest!  This has happened in the past and my wife told me that it always happens in the winter months!  Why didn't I remember that???

I think my thumb hole is to big also, but I am not going to get it plugged and drilled smaller, I think I am going to try and get some of that bowlers tape that you just slap on the inside. That way, when the warmer seasons do come around, if my thumb swells a lil from the humidity and what not, I can just pull the tape out, give it a good cleaning as to get the sticky junk out, and be GOOD TO GO!

Because you're human!
We do forget, if it's not something that's in the forefront of our mind. Mine change between the time I leave the house and the 35 - 50 minute drive to the alleys. The ychange between the 1st frame and the 3rd game. So I am constantly changing tape in the thumb hole and shims behind the finger inserts. I do that more than change to lane condiitons (which hurts sa lot!).

Okay.  Here's an update.  I bought myself some of those strips that go on your thumb for a tournament today.  Great success with the tape, just not on the lanes.  Rather brutal shot out there today.  Oh well!
