blisters
« on: July 12, 2010, 08:21:48 AM »
I never have a problem with blisters during the winter leagues but during the PBA league this summer I have worn a nasty blister on the inside of my thumb. What do some of you guys do to alleviate the pain???

Are you sure that your thumb has not swelled up a bit more than normal due to humidity so that it is not exiting as cleanly as during the winter?

To help the blister heal, I have heard to use a vitamin E capsule.  Break it open and smear the vitamin E on the blister and bandage it.  Don't know about the pain.

I'm thinking the pain is b/c the blister doesn't have enough time to heal 100% before I have to bowl again. Lately, I haven't felt like I've had a good grip on the ball almost feel like I'm going to drop it from time to time. I'm not to sure if I need the thumb moved or what.

A blister means you're rubbing "that spot" in the thumb hole. Once it heals snug up the hole with some tape so you can hold the thumb flat and still keep it secure. This is fairly common, because many of us don't bowl as many games during the summer so the slight swelling of the thumb has time to subside before we bowl again.

I tape my thumb hole quite snug, and contrary to what most people think, it solves the problem easily. No blisters, no scars, easy release, etc.

Which side of the thumb hole would you put the tape on?

I like it so it hits the "pad" of the thumb. In other words if you snug it up top to bottom in the hole you can get away with some extra room on the side.

Bending the knuckle in the thumb hole can cause many problems with the release and the thumb itself. That's exactly what happens if the hole is loose. We feel it's loose and may slip, so we grip harder (usually bending the knuckle).

If you can get adept at adding and removing tape as needed then you can relax the grip some and free up the release, too.

I was bowling last night, and noticed my thumb has shrunk considerably.
I wore a blister on top of my thumb, before I started adding tape.
I don't know why I always wait so long to start adjusting w/ tape.

Don't know about you, but I spend alot of time in the summer in the water
at pools and in the ocean. I was in the ocean for 4-5 hours on Sunday, and I wonder if my skin got saturated thus making it easier for a blister to appear.

I don't have problems in the winter, but it does seem like summer I have more hand problems.

when I have a grueling bowling schedule and a blister, the only relief is applying super glue to my blister.

I think my thumb possibly has shrunk right now because that would be the reason I'm having issues gripping the ball as well.
