Bowled 290 Again and I Didn't Need No New Ball
« on: November 12, 2008, 11:44:57 AM »
Hehe.  My first game was 290 and then the 2nd game I kept striking so that was a 300 over 2 games.  I ended up with only 677 though because the 2nd game I didn't get any good breaks.  Ball used: Black Widow!

Also won the pot this week too so I haven't paid for bowling in quite some time!

I see you were a powerlifter like me! I agree, a new ball is not always the answer. I doubt I will buy any more bowling balls for a long time, plus a couple of regional pro's bowl in my house and they give equipment away all of the time.

I probably gave away 20 bowling balls in the last 4 years. Some more I sold, some people gave more too me and then I gave them away. I got rid of 3 Star Trak's this week. Old polyester urethane balls from the 1970's and 1980's.

As long as the ball is reactive and kept clean, it will work. I have a 2 piece Ebonite Nitro Urethane in the closet I am saving for that dry wood lane someday. I just brought some bowling balls to Goodwill.

Agreed.  I laugh at some of the people on this site that get every single ball that is released as if the designs are that much different.  IMO, all you need is a good clean coverstock, holes that are drilled to maximize your release, and a decent core design.  Also, I feel you can make huge advances in your game just by going to the gym and getting stronger overall.  People always want the quick fix by getting a new ball.  Most of the balls that come out I can't even use anyways because it just becomes a pain in the butt to keep it on the lane.  I got my Vertigo polished to 4000 grit on a resurface last week.  Been using that for like 3 years + and looks like new.

Do you really consider a Black Widow not a "new" ball?

Or are you just talking about people that buy a lot of new equipment?

Funny thing is, a new ball never increased my average. Occasionally a new cover may hit harder at first, but if you have a decent sized weight block and a clean cover, on the THS it really doesn't matter.

In 2008 with a ball with well over 200 games I shot:

xxxxxxxxxx9/ 289
xxxxxxxxx7/x 277
72xxxxxxxxxx9 278

I doubt having a new ball will matter.

Agreed.  But what really makes me mad about the bowling industry is how all the companies pretty much falsely advertise their products.  Bowling isn't like golf where a club can make a ball go farther and farther with no limits.  Bowling is 60 feet.  You can only hook it so much at any given speed and still get a strike.  Balls have already reached perfection to do this years ago.  To me everything now is just a very small step forward and every year the steps get less and less.  Bowling balls as a whole and in particular the best balls any company has are pretty much the same.  I see videos of Ebonite showing their NV's, Hammer with their Widows, Brunswick with their Fury's, etc. and they all look nearly identical.

Also I can create a 'new ball' by having a ball I have resurfaced since the coverstock is the most important part of the ball IMO.

The second.  In my league every week I see the same guys going out getting new stuff or having the stuff they are using changed.  One guy used 6 different balls in the first game alone and only ended up with like 202.  I just find it funny how people will blame the ball and spend all this money when they can significantly improve their game by exercising their wrist/forearms and just getting overall stronger from lifting weights in the gym.

Nice game, but I'd hardly call the BW an old ball.  It was released in the middle of 2006, so it's no more than 2 years old.  It's basically still a current release sice the Bite and Venom are just minor tweaks of the same ball.  Unless you're a pro or bowl on demanding lane conditions all the time where every last bit of performance makes an impact, there's no reason a ball can't be used 3-5 years.

My point exactly.  The balls do have minor differences.  One might give you a 10 pin once a game whereas another will give you a 10 pin twice.  With money on the line and everyone so close in standings, that is important to have a giant arsenal.  But I'm talking about the common league bowler who spends all this time and money having every single ball that comes out and then with their OOB finish, get all happy for the 15-21 games the ball works like nothing else.  Obviously a new ball is going to hook a lot more than it will later, but is that really needed?

The new ball aspect mainly becomes a factor on tougher and a wider variety of conditions when different reaction shapes are required more reaction and carry.

On a house shot, not so much.

Let's see 677 - 290 = 387/2 =193

Sounds like you needed to change balls sometime in the 2nd game.  "Learn to adjust" sometimes is not enough.  By the way I would not consider a BW an old ball.  It is as good ball as an example The TNV I have came out before the BW and I shot 300 with it a few weeks ago.  Newer is better but I agree you can still score with older equipment.  I have a Total Inferno I break out every so often and quite well with it.

What really makes me laugh is that the OP belittles people who frequently buy gear, yet he posts a dozen balls in his signature as well as a link to his arsenal, which show a lot more than the dozen listed.

But yet you blamed the fact that you did not get any breaks in game two for your inability to follow up your 290.  When in doubt, blame anything you can other than yourself, right?

I ended up with only 677 though because the 2nd game I didn't get any good breaks.
