Why do some bowlers do it?

For me it warms it up a little, puts a little moisture in there and gives me a little better grip without having to put any tape in the ball

I do it so i get some moister in the thumb hole, its helps me hang onto the ball longer. I does this when i feel that my thumb hole feels a little bit too large.

Feel.  I don't always do it, only if necessary.  Much less sticky than more resin, and if it feels too tacky, I just work the thumb in and out a few times until the feel is just right.

I use to only do it when my thumb hole was too big, but it has since become a natural part of my preshot routine, and it gives me a little better grip, and maybe another rev or two.

It just feels very weird if I don't do it.

Thanks a lot guys. Usually, during the last game of a 4-game set, my thumb shrinks a bit and I tend to squeeze the ball so not to drop it and I'm too lazy to add another tape since the match is almost over. In future, I will try this technique of blowing into the thumb hole. This forum is really great as we can always get answers to our problems. Thanks again.

I do the opposite, I blow on my thumb before bowling.  Started doing it years ago when I bowled in a center where more than half of the blowers didn't work.  --  JohnP

Same here - when I feel the hole is a bit slippery or my thumb has shrunk (esp. in cold winter climate, and when the ball is cold, too), I blow into the thumb hole as a part of my pre-shot routine. It yields a better grip for me, when I want it.
