Title: Blue Pearl Hammer flaring..
Post by: BradleyInIrving on May 15, 2015, 11:57:15 PM
Odd stuff... Watched a PBA tourney (forget which one) that had Wayne Webb
throwing an "axis" blue pearl hammer.... It came off his hand with the weighthole
on his axis (as it should) but then about 50 feet down the lane that sucker flipped
over and flared..

Any idea where that pin could've been?

My guesses have been...
1. Pin was in that weight hole and drilled out
2. Pin was on his VaL..

Having one of the old urethane Hammers that would flare wasn't totally unheard of, even if we didn't fully understand it yet. I myself had a red solid with a 2 inch pinout that I drilled with a basic label drilling. With the pinout though, it ended up almost exactly 3 3/8 inch from my pap, and the ball would flare 2-3 inches!  We didn't fully understand what that meant, or why it did that, but MAN that ball would hook AND hit.

My guess is that it was one of those somewhat rare pinout balls. I've heard that Mr. Webb liked to experiment with different drillings, and may have just stumbled into a combination that created enough differential to cause significant flare.

I believe the original Hammer core had .024 differential and, if you used a drilling that enhanced it some, getting it to flare really wouldn't be all that hard, especially given that they didn't use nearly the volume or viscosity of conditioners we use today.

If the pin was out a couple of inches, and he put it on a line from his pap to his ring finger, seeing it flare wouldn't be surprising at all, not with today's knowledge.

IIRC, the pin was always in the label on those old urethane releases, including the Faball Hammer balls. As such, the pin was drilled out along with much of the rest of the label with the Axis layout. The only part of the label remaining was the outer circle.
I didn't like Hammers drilled with your typical "label" drill; however, once I switched to Axis drill layouts for all of my Hammer balls, they rolled amazing for me.

Jugg - It didn't flare much but you know back then 2 to 3" was a ton of flare lol..   It was just freaky to see the hole being so sweet on his PaP and then it TURNED OVER.. i'm like wtf! lol

I agree. When my old red one flared, we initially thought it was screwy, but it worked, so I threw it. Had lots of good scores with that one, wish I had held on to it. 😕

Because the weight hole was on his PAP you think it wouldn't flip down lane?

The old hammer cores were around .02 diff range so it was close to 3.375" and there were pin outs in those...

That was my guess as well Mr. Hamlin.  I also saw what you said the other day about flare and hand release/revolutions.  Mr. Webb used to get plenty on the ball to create those conditions, don't you think?
