First time in League
« on: May 26, 2003, 06:59:47 PM »
I finally joined a league. Have been trying for a long time but they keep getting canceled. I was told that since it is a Handicap league, that I should hold back/ sand bag so I will start with a low average. Not sure that I can do that being I am competitive and a perfectionist when it comes to sports. I am also not sure that it is ethical to do such a thing.

The people that told you that you should sand bag need to be slapped, that is just wrong. Maybe the are just scared that you will beat them if you don't.

BTW, do these people know that if you intentionally sandbag and do it in a sanctioned league that it is against abc/wibc rules and they can be suspended from the league. I would go to a league official and make it known what these people told you!!

How am I supposed to knock all 10 down with one ball?!?

I just found it wierd. I understand their reasoning behind telling me that. I have been in Sports (Wrestling) for a very long time. I have competed at every level from a little kid at 5 years old all the way to International Competition in my 20s and 30s. In all that time, I have never heard anyone tell someone to hold back.

It realy doesn't matter though because it being my first night, I will probably be nervous and not Bowl well. Plus I am not any good as it is. So I realy don't need to hold back to get low scores....lol

I seem to recall a previous discussion about 'bagging that got rather heated.  Well, I'm about to start the first league that I've been in in 17 years, and I'm going to do my best, handicap be damned.  I'm sure there will be a few nights where I bowl much over my average and a few where I'm much under.  It happens.  But it all averages out in the end, right? I'm just happy to be out there, meeting new people, trying to beat my personal bests, and having a good time.  I'm not concerned with how well other people bowl, since I'm not trying to make a living at it. I will watch and learn and perhaps try to import a few things I see into the way I bowl to make me better.  It's a never ending ambition.  It's like the way you look at "quality."  It's not a destination, it's a process. Always do your best and keep your integrity.  It’s one thing no one can ever take away from you.

Take away Handicap leagues and I can guarantee you, Bowling Centers will start dropping like Fly's. Most Bowlers do not average 200+.

Handicap actualy makes it harder for the 200 avg Bowlers. They have to perform well every week because the lower avg Bowlers are more likely to improve by more Pins week to week.

If all leagues were scratch, than a team with all 200 avg Bowlers will not get any better. You will see them in many games where they are easily 40+ pins better than every player on the other teams. Knowing this, they could very easily not keep their focus, become sloppy and develop bad habbits.

If you want to play scratch, there are plenty of Tourney to enter. The only problem there is that 200 isn't going to get you very far.
