Bowling while injured?
« on: March 14, 2004, 06:44:44 PM »
I've had some problems with my left knee for a few weeks and can't seem to get healthy.  As a lefty, this is not my sliding leg.

Just when I think it's OK to bowl, it acts up on me.  The knee buckles ever so slightly when I'm in my approach and takes me off balance.

Friday night, I started off feeling OK in practice and had an unbelievable shot, about the 5th frame, while in my approach, it gave out and I made one bad shot after another.  The end result was the lowest set I've had in several years.

If this continues, I'm going to have Sawbones put a cast on me so at least everyone will know that I'm injured and that is why I suck so bad.

Does anyone else have nagging injuries that keep you from being you best?  What do you do about it.

Hose, last summer when I ended up putting a tear in my left knee's meniscus (sp), they also found bursitus (sp) in the right knee, and tendonitis in my right elbow...what a trip to the Doc! Despite taking 2 months off, I still get aches and pains...and it has severly caused my game to suffer. I was going to bowl in the Classic Shootouts this summer, but am leaning to taking the entire summer off.
I feel for you, as it is terrible to get old

A week ago Friday I jammed the knuckles of my bowling hand .. knuckles and wrist were sore. Although I bowl 4 days of the week .. I took this week off. Yesterday (Sunday) I had to try  bowling although the wrist is still sore. To my surprise I was able to throw the ball .. didn't do as well as I normally do .. but .. I was able to get the ball CLOSE to where I was throwing! Going to go back and bowl with the leagues .. hoping I can make SOME contribution! YES .. it's tough to bowl with injuries .. I guess all you can do is GRIN AND BARE IT!!

Hose,
I would have to agree with MTFD 24, Had the same symtoms but in the slide leg, turned into two surgeries to repair and remove torn tissue. Hope for you it is not the same.

Hose- I had some problems a little while ago,and took 2 whole weeks off without lifting a ball.  Sawbones yelled at me, and tried his best to get me to go see a Dr.  Well, I got the name of a Dr., but haven't seen him yet... After my two weeks off, my knee is doing much better - although I do use a brace to lend a little extra stability.  It felt so much better after that short break that I figure on laying off all summer and see how it does next fall.  If it still bothers me then, I'll probably be forced to see the Dr.

Also, about your knee giving out, I had some back problems years ago, and every once in a while a nerve in the lower back would get pinched and cause my knee (leg basically) to give a little.  Don't have any back problems do you?  Got my back straightened out and haven't had this problem since.  Good Luck!

Actually, Sawbones didn't yell, but he strongly encouraged me to see the Dr.!

You haven't lived until you've suffered 2nd and 3rd degree muscle strain to your adductor and abdominal muscles while bowling.  Every time you take a step or move your uper body to one side or the other, shockwaves of searing pain go shooting through your lower regions.  Thoughts of bowling are very far away.

My little incident occurred about 18 months ago and I still cannot follow through like I used to for fear of tearing myself again.

Hose,

There are a host of possible reasons for knee pain. Until you know what it is, you don't know the proper treatment. SO you are probably doing a lot of potential damage. While I ain't as old as Bones, I do have some problems once in a while. Glucosamine/Chondroitin helps me, but who knows what might help you: Advil, Aleve, knee brace, NOT bowling (God forbid!) or ??? But you better find out exactly what it is OR you might never be able to bowl again!  Seriously!

Anybody who recommends one potential remedy over another, WITHOUT knowing the cause of your pain, is backing you into a corner, from which you may never emerge.

Don't be a "kid" who thinks I am invulnerable and I'll just work thru the pain. That doesn't work with knees.
