Shoed Up Last Night
« on: February 16, 2005, 12:04:20 AM »
8 1/2 weeks after a total knee replacement I shoed up for the first time.
After going through a warm up and stretching a bit I began to "approach " the foul line. I was loose enough but in the back of my mind I could not imagine what it was going to feel like. Finally after about 5 minutes of trying to convince myself it was going to be ok, I picked up the ball and walked to the line and delivered the first ball in almost 9 weeks. The knee was a bit "shaky" when I went into the slide step, but it held and the ball came off my hand with ease. I continued to look down at the foul line in amazement, looking at the "new knee". I managed to bowl 1 full game without any pain or discomfort, my biggest fear was, fear itself. When I had finished I had 5-6 people behind me looking in amazement at what I was doing, most looking in disbelief, as they had seen me go from a walker, to cane, to hobbling, to limping and finally walking to jogging. I was most proud of the fact the first ball I through was a pocket shredding strike, from that ball until the end I began to believe this might have been a sound decision to have the knee replaced. Tonight I'll attempt to bowl 15 frames, as the upper thigh does not possess the strength needed to support my slim 243 pound physique.

Thats awesome! Its horrible to not be able to bowl, I know how it feels. (not as much pain, but still have been in the position where I couldnt bowl) Its good to hear your back on the lanes, even if its only for a game or so a week. You'll get back up to strength, and be bowling like normal again! Good luck, I hope everything heals up, and gets stronger again!

A friend of mine had a similar story. He got into a bad car accident in which he was hospitalized for several days. He broke his jaw and fractured his kneecap. He missed a week in league, then we had the next two weeks off for the christmas holiday. When we resumed bowling, three weeks after the accident he was back bowling. Since then, he has done some of his best bowling. Crazy fool.

Bones, if I had only known a few years prior, I would have had this done earlier. The past couple of years had been so agonizing both physically and mentally. I have had to drop out of various tournaments as well as league play due to the pain and discomfort. I had spent all last summer altering my power game to a less aggressive game to alleviate the stress on the knee. Even though I had made changes in my game I was not satisfied with the way I was scoring mainly because it was not me. So I finally met with my friendly surgeon and asked him the questions I needed answered, and within thirty minutes I was ready to do the deed. Less than a week later I was at his mercy again, (2 previous scopes, and a rotator cuff repair). We joke all the time about me owing a piece of his airplane, and paying for his snowboarding trip to Colorado. Three weeks post op I did not feel I had made the correct decision. Beginning the 4th week I could see a vast improvement. An now I would do it again if the other knee failed without hesitation. It feels better today than it had at anytime in the past 4 years. Now all I have to do is get in shape and my game ready for Nationals in June.

tekneek,

Wonderful! I'm very happy to hear it. I have to have two knee replacements and a left hip. Dang...my doc doesn't want to do them untill I'm down to about 220 lbs. due to the fact that I had a quad by-pass 13 years ago. I'm currently 6'3" and 312lbs. Have gone through the Synvisc (http://www.synvisc.com) shots which helped alot, but I'm afraid they are wearing off.

Oh well I guess it's back to the Atkins diet. it's the only diet that has ever worked for me. Untill then I guess I'll just keep having one good game, one ok game, and one really bad one. Oh well, it's gotten really old!

Buck hang in there, you can do it. It is frustrating but it was well worth it as you already know. My surgeon was not happy about doing mine with me just 53, he had told me after my last scope 2 yrs ago I would be looking at a knee replacement in 18-24 mo. if I did not stop bowling, maybe 5 yrs if I quit. Well we all know now he was right and I kept bowling. LOL That was the only reason he went on and did it now, he knew I wouldn't quit. He and I have a very good understanding, I'll do as I want, much to his displeasure most of the time. However I must say he was and is very understanding physician and I have complete trust and confidence in anything he deemed necessary. I guess you would call that blind faith and allegiance.

Chango, actually he told me 6 weeks post op I could go back to bowling. It has taken me 2 1/2 weeks to get up the courage to try it. I'm a bit sore this morning, muscle soreness, from not being used, other than that I feel great.
