Book Stores going out of business!!!
« on: July 23, 2011, 10:50:42 AM »
Ever wonder why bookstores are going out of business?   This week Borders said they are calling it quits.  HHHmmmmmm.....     Could it be they have nothing you want to read???   I know that is my issue with Barnes and Noble.   I called every major book retailer in the city of Dallas to find bowling books and magazines.   No one had any magazines and when you asked about books you could almost see the glassy eyed looks thru the phone.  The most common answer is"well we carry baseball and wwe magazines".   To quote a common wrestling phrase " EXCUSE ME! EXCUSE ME!".   Bowlers Journal is impossible to get by the issue here and so is Bowling this Month.  I am considering buying a tablet to teach with when I am on the road.   One of the advantages to it is the ease of book usage.  The question now is can you get good bowling materials for the tablets?

Borders didn't go out of business because they didn't carry bowling magazines that they would of thrown away at the end of each month because they didn't sell.   There was a time in the 80's and 90's you could get Bowling Magazine, and Bowling Digest at the book store, if bowling was that popular how come these magazines fizzed and went away.  I was the only person who bought the magazines every month, the local book store use to tell me.

Bowling books are a niche sale, and not worth having on the shelves for the $14.95 the book costs.

If you haven't figured it out already, because most of us are hard core bowlers and don't want the sport to die,  the majority of the public doesn't care about bowling any longer.   It's on it's way out.  You don't need books for the general public to read so they know how to bowl.  You throw the ball forward and knock down pins.   The general public doesn't care any longer about the game.

It's kinda sad that the public doesn't feel they need book stores anymore.  Everything is becoming too easy to do.  Just get some kinda device and you have what you need.  It's very lazy and the American way.  Thousands of jobs are now lost because people do not need books or magazines anymore.   Wireless and paperless.
Going green...is staring to be going gone.......everything is going bye bye.

I agree that bowling is a niche market and why have a lot of returns at the end of the month for unsold magazines.  Without any exposure the 2 remaining magazines will find it hard to survive.  If you look at the magazines they do carry you still have to wonder how many they actually sell.   Even a small amount of magazines would be great and if the BPAA would join in and help promote each other with them it would work.  If people will clip coupons off the back of tv dinners they will buy magazines too.  But the USBC is in competition in some ways with the magazines.  I'm not happy with green either.  90% of the time I go into B&N they do not have what I want or anything of interest.  It doesn't matter if it is bowling related or not.

It's funny I can almost always find something at 1/2 price books!

Well, that's an interesting take on the book store business.

I would have guessed they were going out of business due to the insanely expensive cost of retail space, and relatively low traffic flow and/or low profit margins.

Or the popularity of on-line sales.  Warehouse space is cheaper than retail space, even when you factor in shipping costs, they probably still come out ahead.

Or, the increase in e-readers and/or smartphone apps.   My wife likes to read, and she really seems to enjoy the Nook Color I bought her for her birthday.

Probably the same reasons that you no longer see any music stores - remember Sam Goody, Waxie Maxie, Penguin Feather,  etc?

And same thing with video stores.   You can pretty much find anything you need on-line.  If you want it now, you're pretty much limited to the 20-30 things that stores like Walmart, Target, and Best Buy want you to have.

I still buy books (and CDs....gasp!), and probably have 12-15 different magazines that I receive each month.......now I just need time to read them all!

Bowling Magazine and Bowling Digest don't exist anymore do they?

If Obamacare is so great why are so many waivers being asked for and given?

Print is not what it was. By the death of so many magazines and news papers ect ect. I think the trend will continue.

Many magazines are going to online only status because of the drop in subscriptions and the cost effectiveness of doing so. Why would anyone carry bowling books or magazine is beyond me. The sales for that are probably so small that they are rarely printed anymore. Kind of like having a large stock of rotary phones.

May want to try a library.

"Get out of bowling what you want because that is all there is."
…… you can't  add a physics term to a bowling term and expect it to mean something.

Sir,  IMO  bowling is not on it's way out...5 man team league bowling may be on it's way out...

Very hard to fill a 5 man team nowadays...Centers seem to refuse to lower teams to 3 man or 4 man...
And today's younger bowlers do not want to bow 35 weeks...

Centers need to adjust leagues schedules...

Start leagues in Sept. not Aug... And end leagues in March not May...

Today's younger crowd just have too much going on to get tied down for 35 weeks...

As for Borders... Online sales really hurt them...

Online sales hurt just about all retail business's...Not just bowling and books...

Heck the US Post Office is down 50% in first class mail...Cause more and more people are
paying their bills online...

But believe it or not...In the bowling industry, I'm seeing fewer and fewer online balls brought
in for drilling...

Customers are realzing that they are not saving that much anymore...Especially since Ebonite
and Storm started their pricing policies...When they factor in the cost of drilling...
