Twister Pins
« on: May 17, 2007, 04:32:28 PM »
What has your experience been with them?  I would like to hear some opinions and information about Twister pins.  My house switched to them to start our summer league tonight, and before I share my experience, I would like to hear some thoughts.  Compare and constrast with regular wood pins, etc.

from my experience, they don't carry as well, you leave a lot more corner pins.  Other than that, they are fine.

A lot more 10 pins on good pocket shots.  A lot more mixer strikes from light hits.

Not a fan of them at all, especially the grey labelled ones. Lots of 4-9s and 4 pins. To me they carry better light. The newer ones with the red stripes seem little bit better carrywise.

Ours are the gray labeled ones, and I do have to agree with the idea of better carry on light hits.

I do think that these pins seem to fly around quite a bit more.  Last night my teammate and I lit the lanes on fire; we were both throwing the ball extremely well.  My teammate started out the first game with a 300, then followed with a 269 and a 270 for a nice 839.

Before we started he told me based on his experience that we should be able to score well, but be ready to leave a ton of 9 pins.  Obviously that didn't happen to him.

Then there was me: I missed the pocket once all night, and by that I mean that I had ONE shot that wasn't either dead flush or light flush.  That one shot came up high and I left a Greek Church in the first game.  I shot 243-278-228 for a very good 749, but I left 7 stone 9-pins on the dead flush shots.  SEVEN!  I also had several strikes where the 9 was taken out by a messenger.  What my teammate said was pretty prophetic in my case.  I pretty much alternated strikes and 9 pins for the most of the 3rd game.

This was the first night of our summer league.  I am happy with a 749, but I can't help but think about how we both bowled well enough that we could have easily both shot 800 on the first night of league as teammates.  Would have been cool.  Obviously he didn't have any problems with carry, but out of the 4 frames he didn't strike, at least two were shots that "should" have carried.  Crazy to think about!

I thought Twister Pins were obsolete?  I heard that they stopped production.

Why does everyone try to make it harder than it really is?  Overthinking makes the game that much more difficult.

several years ago, one of our local houses installed them.  Instantly, league averages were down 10-20 pins across the board.  Supposedly, these pins were made to be "more lively," but they just don't seem to carry as well.  As said before.. anything that appears to be flush or a touch high usually results in a 4 pin or a 4-9...  We had an unreal number of corner pins... of any shot, the light mixers seemed to carry the best.  They lasted two seasons and have since been replaced with AMFlite's which are night and day better.

I agree- No other pin can match AMF for scoreability.

Traditional pins have a break-in period. When new the bottoms are flatter and they are almost too lively. With a little wear the bottoms round off and the pins settle down. This keeps the messengers on the deck and rolling as opposed to flying directly into the gutters and pit.I believe even the USBC allows some pre tournament bowling to break in the pins and lanes.

Twisters react like brand new traditional pins except they don't break in.You always have that new pin reaction no matter how much use they get.For that reason pins normally knocked over by weak pin taps will stand and high flush hits will put any potential messengers in the gutters and pit.Light hits that keep the pins low and rolling on the deck will carry better.

Until they develope a Twister that has the broke in reaction as opposed to new pin reaction I will NOT be a fan.

The first time my house put twisters in I rolled 2 300's.They have recently put some new ones in and I have to echo what a few people have said in that you will leave lots of single pins (inc a lot of 9 pins) and that light hits do seem to take 10 out more often than flush strikes.

I would have got away with it if it was not for those pesky kids (Behind my lane) and those blasted 10 pins.
