Playing 7th arrow
« on: April 28, 2004, 02:54:23 AM »
Ok, first of all, I'm not trying to pick a fight, or call michelle out or anything, I'd just like some more input.  If it can be done, sure, ok, whatever, but I'd like to hear more than just a few people say it, or seeing a video would be great.  I have never seen ANYONE play 7th arrow.  Sorry, but the very concept just seems ridiculous.  When you have angles that steep and harsh, not to mention that they're combined with obviously uniquely demanding conditions to make you even consider playing that deep, you'd think it'd end up making it harder than it should be.  I mean, you've gotta loft the left gutter to play 6th arrow to begin with, I just don't see how any condition could be that screwed up, late shift or not.  I'll have to ask Rick or Bob Benoit next time I see them too, cause although I'm REALLY skeptical, I still think it'd be interesting to see someone actually play out there.

I agree, even if the conditions were that choppy/dry to even have to play 7th arrow(which wold require a loft from the opposite lane over that lane's gutter, over the guttercap, and over the gutter that you're bowling on just for the ball to go through the 7th arrow), by the time your ball made it to 35 feet it'd hook right back off into the left channel.  And what makes people think seeking out that far to look for head oil is the answer?  If any lefties have been playing that area(which most do) they've burnt a sizeable track in the midlane, or a tube up the leftside so how is your ball going to ignore that dry on the leftside to feed right?  It just doesn't make sense to me, and trust me, I've seen my share of crap shots.  I work in a center where they give us the cheapest crap oil that AMF makes and I have to lay out a shot on it and trust me, the stuff burns up like rubbing alcohol.

Seventh arrow is just a term people use when they want to make themselves sound better than they actually are.  The deepest I've ever played, or have ever seen played and has actually hit the right side of the pocket would be 6th arrow at the extreme, maybe a shade left of it playing a frozen rope with no rotation at all.  It's amazing how quick people dismiss using plastic in a playable line just to seek out right and try to wheel it over the cap.

I've had to play basically 33-35 exactly twice (OK maybe it was only 33 at the arrows, who is quibbling) -- the extreme angle was to prevent the ball from burning up in the heads and played with plastic.  Reactives and urethanes burned up or overhooked.  Flipping it over the gutter caps.  Really.  It sucked.

i think robert smith talked about playing deep once. he was standing 18 on the lane left to the one he was playing on and launching it over the gutter to land back on his own lane. he said he had to loft it 35 feet to at times so it is not impossible but it may not be neccesary.

Laying the ball down at 35 is pretty normal for getting deep, and that's easily believable, but the ball actually crossing 7th arrow seems a tad extreme.

The deepest I ever  saw anyone play was at the first Eliminator at Sam’s town.

John Gaines (who eventually won the tournament) during match play was playing  between the 6th and 7th arrows. He was lofting the gutter cap and the gutter and the ball was landing on about the 5 board at the 10 ft mark. Once shot he didn’t clear the gutter and the ball stayed in it. Was one of the loudest noises I ever heard in bowling alley. The gutter almost cost him that match.

I have played 6th arrow at ABC nationals myself.

In league play I seldom see anyone deeper than 5th.

[I have seen guys play 7th arrow successfully. Just learn to throw a backup ball. Lefties hate this. /quote]

Boy, I did that last Thursday.  I had missed the hole exactly 0 times and had 388 for 2.  this horrible lefty had thrown around 16 different shots and had 555 for 2.  So I threw back-up for the final game (I'm actually pretty good at it, could easily average 200).  Anyway, I didn't throw it as well as I normally can throw back-up, but I still shot 190.  But the best part was he actually blamed me for messing up his oil which caused him to not shoot 8.

Personally, I have played 33rd board but my break point was 15th board at 50 ft. However, I have seen several young PBA players play 7th arrow if not 37th board at that the arrows and sending it to 10 and hook it back still with enough power and not burn up. It is possible and I would not have believed it unless I saw it with my own eyes. I asked this pro if he could pay deeper and he moved left , hit the second board about 15 ft down the lane (over the center gutter cap) out to 10 at 35 ft and back high flush. This pros name was Michael Fagan and this was last year in Memphis. He commented that he has played deeper than this but I dont know. I did not think that was possible. So 7th arrow is possible and I personally have seen it. I cant do it. But my son can loft it like that but cant get it back. He has to play it tighter to the pocket but he can play 33-35 with alot more power than me.
