Need Help On Speed/Timing
« on: March 25, 2005, 01:22:03 PM »
I have been having some timing/speed problems recently so I have a question to ask about that.  When I bowl my normal speed, it seems my timing is good but my ballspeed is way too slow so my carry is really low.  When I try to get the ballspeed up, my timing is off, but if I get the ball in the pocket, my carry is up.

I think the proper way for me to get more speed is to try to get my footwork at a faster pace rather than trying to get my armswing faster but it seems to me that the two go together.  If you increase one, the other should also be increased or the timing is off.  If I am correct, which should I work on getting faster first - my armswing or my footwork?  If I am not correct, please let me know and offer any suggestions.  Thanks.

Bob would probably tell you that your armswing is not free. Go back to basics, to the pushaway. Make sure it's free, and take practice swings if you must.

mumzie, you're right it is not a free armswing when I try to increase ball speed.  If I get a relaxed armswing it is much slower - my old pace.  It might be the pushaway, will work on it in practise.

Inverted, I tried that last night, holding the ball higher but it felt like I started muscling the ball near the top of the backswing.  I was pulling the ball almost every time.  Getting the ball faster has always been a problem for me.  I can go slower with no problem except the ball over-reacts to the backends.  I will try again in practise and see if I can stop the muscle at the top of the backswing.

Thanks for both replies, now I have something to try in practise.

Holy crap you have the exact same problem I had not to long ago. It just comes with practice, my footwork is faster now and so is my ballspeed, now if I could just do something with my darn thumb! Anyway, try not to worry too much, just keep practicing over and over until it feels natural, you will surely get it.
