Middle Road Pattern
« on: September 05, 2011, 10:04:34 AM »
Have a tournament at the weekend on Middle Road... any of you guys played it?  How did you find it played?

I practiced on it tonight and was supprised at how light the oil seemed.. I was hoping for some more volume!  Was wondering if the bowling centre had maybe scalled back the volume, like they did on our league pattern...

I could only use my weaker and smoother equipment...

Cheers

Middle road is our house pattern.
Break point is 7-8 with a little shim to the left but oob to the right. miss a couple right early and you dont hit the 3 pin. im a higher rev guy 450-480 and faster ball speed, cranker style :)
avg arround 205-210.

first ball out of my bag is a pure physics in 2000 with a 40*5½*30 drilling and step down would be my eruption or powerswing. only a few times i get to use my freeze with 4 games and 6 on a pair.

but have a teammate first ball out his bag is onixvibe with polish and a 5½" drilling, or a twisted fury destruction with a 6" drilling, his rev rate is about 400 but he have a slower ball speed.

When the the lanes just got oiled im looking at 12-15 at the arrows and shooting at 7-8 with the pure physics, im not trying to hook alot but trying to control the motion and backend. Breakpoint remains the same but in this house and on this pattern i will often loft the ball before i move left or ball down, in the center i bowl you have to stay right as long as possible because it severely reduce carry when you are to deep. But i think this is the center rather than the pattern.

Morning Ryan,

This is one of our league patterns. As description says ''Middle of the road''...!!! We have found if you do play ''Middle of the road'' on this it plays flat with out of bounds and fancy splits appear.

The best results I have seen on this pattern (righer rev players ie: you) are starting 10 arrows 5-7 breakpoint with weaker drilled or higher RG pearls finish 4000 (not polished), 2000 if you want to power it.

Or even urethane (could be desperado time).

Then depending who else is on the lane either move gradually left if burn appears or straighten up more if they get twitchy. 8 times out of ten on our lanes get carry down so straigtening is better option. Also found if you move to deep too quickly funky things happern. Best advive keep it straigt and simple.

Treat it with the respect as you would do with 'flat short pattern' and you should do well..

Ta

Graham

Looking back at my notes Ryan, I threw an Epicenter at 2000abralon, playing a little in.  17 at the arrows and the bump around 10.  It did burn up pretty quick, and had to shuffle left.  I also played a softer shot on it.  Same ball, but was 12 at the arrows and bump around 8.  Everyone else was playing out there, so I figured the outside to burn up pretty quick and ended up playing in.

Thanks for the replies guys...

I'm finding the same as Makpa and Maidenhead... but having to use a weaker ball.. mainly because I dont throw it too fast!

I started crossing 11 at the arros, out to around 5/6 at the breakpoint... I didnt really see any OOB though... I started on fresh with a weak drilled Blackout (medium strength ball) with a tonne of games on it but abraloned to 1000.  This worked really well.

After one hour I changed to a fresh lane but reaction seemed a little  earlier for some reason, and i changed to a pin down polished Blackout but played the exact same line.  As the shot was breakind down I just made a move of 7 left at my feet and 3 at the arrows which brought my breakpoint in a few boards and stuck with the polished blackout.

Gunny, I didnt have an Epi with me, but I tried a few of my stronger balls and they did'nt really get to the pins with much energy!  I was able to change to an pin up AMP with a scuffed surface when i moved in after a few games, but that was about as strong as I could go...

Our house uses Middle of the Road also.  It's a slightly more difficult house pattern, I have about 2 - 3 boards of room versus 5 on easier THS shots.  I start out playing the second arrow to a break point around the 7 board, but usually by the end of the first game I move in to around the 13 board, break point at about 9.  Of course, how fast the lanes transition depends on the other bowlers on the lane.  --  JohnP

I came first scratch, so got maximum ranking points, and qualified 4th with handicap for the top 8 match-play portion but lost my match so only just almost made back my entry!

The pattern played totaly different from the day I practised on it... I started out trying to play the way I had when practicing, but the ball just didn't want to get down the lane... did't strike once until the last minute of practice!  Found a line playing straight with urethane at the end of practise and started the game with that, but after 6 frames changed to hooking a little... did that the rest of game 2 but after a lane change to a pair that was hooking loads more I had a nighmare in game 3 where I litereally didn't strike all game... moved in deep and opened up the lane from there on and started fireing in the big games (aftermath pearl) and despite a disasterous 157 in the final game scraped 1st by 3 pins : )
