Ron C's Magic Carpet
« on: April 30, 2008, 04:54:50 PM »
Has anyone here tried it?  If so, what does it change about someone's release and why is it better than regular tape?

I've been having some serious issues with my thumb holes.  Some have been better than others but I'm looking for some sort of solid solution.  One thing that's affecting me is that I think I'm squeasing, but I don't think it's a lot.  I don't really know the difference but I know if I loosen my grip throughout my whole swing it will fall off my hand.

I'm not sure of my pitch currently, but I'm gathering that the general agreement is that anyone using the Magic Carpet should have forward pitch?

I think mine is reverse but I don't know how much and I don't know about any lateral.

The carpet allows air to circulate and prevents creating a vacuum when inserting the thumb into the ball with a snug fit.  Having a snug fit prevents squeezing the ball and allowing a more relaxed release.

That's what I'm trying to acheive: More relaxed grip and free swing.  Currently my grip is not very relaxed but I've had worse.  My swing can be free if I focus on it and I'm not ahead of the ball, but I'm sure my unrelaxed grip is a factor in a free swing right?

I figure if I go a little more forward with my pitch, just enough that I have to relax a little more, I'll eventually learn.  But as it is, natural body reaction is to hang on to that ball which probably makes for bad shots.  I think I'm doing good for the circumstances though, averaging 200-205.  Although on already broken down conditions like during practice I only average about 195 and inconsistently, and I think it's that kind of condition that I'm paying on.

ThongPrincess, I feel like I have snug fits already, that is until I swing the ball.  Then it slips and I have to grab it.  I think my thumb holes aren't equal in size from top to bottom, and I think they should be even though my knuckle is wider than the part under(towards the base).  But I also think more forward pitch would help as well.

I thought I had a snug fit until I went to the carpet.  I also have over a course of about 2 - 3 years increased my forward pitch.  I am at 5/8 forward.  I only started using the carpet 1 - 2 years ago.

Experiment and find what works for you.  Personally I like the carpet, but it is not for everyone.

Yeah, I'm going to see if I can convince my driller to go more forward on my pitch as long as I don't have to change my span.  I don't want to need the carpet so hopefully it's a pitch problem more than anything.

Since I've apparently been squeasing the ball every since I started bowling competetively, I don't know what it's supposed to feel like when I don't.  Is the ball supposed to stay on your hand and feel a little tight if you just hold the ball as if you're at the bottom of your swing?  In other words, even if you apply more pressure to the back of the hole than the front, it should still be on your hand firmly?

I'm trying to figure this out because I find it hard to not hold on to it through the back swing.  When it comes forward I know how to let go of it but sometimes the release is inconsistent(more side roll/revs on some shots than others).
