Bowled on a sport shot tonight...
« on: December 27, 2006, 11:51:15 AM »
averaged 175 on it, what a delight it was to be challenged to make shots.

flat flat flat pattern, close to zero friction area the first 45 feet gutter to gutter.

tryed to play cute with it first game, not knowing what it was.
played up about 12, skid skid skid, weak light hit.
played inside tight, inconsistent carry but seemed to have the most friction for some reason.

first game, 167

second game, i went Norm Duke and shot from the corner, frozen rope to the pocket, carry was ok, probably 4 boards of backend movement.
high flush carried well, 183, even with a pocket 7-10.

third game, backends loosened up a bit, still shot frozen rope. missed an idiotic spare after a dead nuts flush pocket shot leaving a stone 9 pin, ditched it, got to the line early.
finished with a 169, left a 4-6-7-10 middle of the game after trying to migrate back in out of curiosity.
it was tough keeping speed up hoping for 10 pin carry off the edge, so i figured why not try it, and i paid big time.

overall, i think i did ok walking in expecting a house shot and getting a sport shot, adjusting, making the most of it and making most of my spares.

any other way to play this pattern consistently besides a norm duke frozen rope over 1st arrow to the pocket off the corner?

Thanks.

Eric

It's just that easy!

Sounds like a similar shot I bowled on my travel league. Before this session, it was a pretty short shot, my Tropical Storm was hookin' most of the lane. Well, we got to the house, and the pattern changed on us. Didn't have the right ball with me, ended up throwing a straight line with about 3 boards of backend with my Tropical. Still shot a 170 average, but I think I really could've done better.

When the shot is that flat and the backends haven't "settled", straighter is greater.  Not necessarily a rocket to the pocket.  However, a controlled, direct shot to the pocket with a release that's up the back of the ball.  You're looking for a shot that gets you to the pocket and leaves you with manageable spares.

Sounds like the oil they put down in my house. The best area to play is between first and second arrow.

that was the plan game 2 and on.

frozen rope to me means about 16 MPH and straight about 3 board to about 5 board at the arrows to the pocket with about 3-4 boards backend.

much repect to Norm Duke, this shot isnt easy, but with practice, I think I could be effective with the shot.

The gutter doesnt intimidate me, but the set down and arrow marks are key to the angle to the pocket.

Watching Norm Duke playing the Shark pattern or a straight shot is a quick lesson in perfection.  He could place a dime at the arrows and a nickel at 45 feet and hit them both 75% of the time.  At times, he makes it look like a house shot.  Each shot, a near carbon copy of the next.  Walter Ray is anothe one that can kill those shots.  Not surprisingly, they've won over 3500 tournaments.  Ok, Ok.  relax.  I'm only joking.  However, for this reason alone, I consider them to be the best talents in the game today.

On that shot ive had 2 different tactics work for me.  Play from the corner with a ball that gets into a heavy early roll, like my Scorching.  Or play a tight line between 2nd and 3rd arrow with a stronger pearl like the Absolute or SA.

For me faster speeds didnt work very well.  With that much oil any ball I threw fast will just skid the whole way and hit flat.  My Scorching is drilled to get into an early roll, and with the surface at 400 dull it does just that.  I had to keep the speed down to give it time to get into a roll and stay behind the ball.

With the Absoulute, its layed out for length and back end off the drys.  There isnt much drys to work with, but enough to get some angle into the pocket.  I kept the speed down as there was enough oil to get the ball down the lane well enough, and put a little tilt on it so it would kick off the dry when it got there.

Carry on both sucks and thats expected.  Best thing to do is what you did.  Keep the ball in the pocket, avoid splits and make your spares.

Good luck!

I was rolling with the Absolute tonight, here is the layout:

Absolute Inferno

gave me a nice smooth arc with a flat release, and some pop when it was flush.

i cant imaging trying to control a skid/snap ball on this type of shot.

Absolute was probably the best ball i could have brought, i lucked out.

I almost left it home and brought just my combat zone tracer and a spare ball, instead I brought all 3.

I dont have my Absolute anymore, but it was always a strong arc, not a snap reaction for me. It was layed out similar to yours, but my pap is 4 1/2 to 5 ove and up 1/2.  It still needed dry boards to really drive to the pocket, but that move was very controllable for me.

My Widow is a skid/snap ball, and I dont even like it on a THS never mind a flat pattern...

my A game is about 15 to 7, that was what i started with in practice, and it was super washout time.

i couldnt play a swing, it was OB beyond board 15.

A sport shot normally plays much differently (think opposite) than a THS.  A basic rule of thumb is the longer the pattern, the farther inside you need to play.  The shorter the pattern, the farther outside you need to play.

As you move in, you must also move your target in.  You are normally not able to swing the ball to the outside and expect to bring it back to the pocket.

I totally agree those two are the best in the PBA.  That also tells one that throwing it straight is still the best approach for the most part.

I spent a lot of time learning how to rev it up but just recently changed to throwing it more up the back and straighter.  The great thing about the straighter approach is that one can use it to score on almost all conditions.
