Can a team put their Captain off the team?

There is a team in my league that has a bowler that has bowled a total of 2 games after 4 weeks of bowling.  She has been there every week and has paid her dues but for some reason she will decide not to bowl.  The one week she did bowl, she bowled the first two games and decided not to bowl the last one.

Our secretary had a female bowler interested in joining their roster which would enable them to bowl at full strength when the team captain decides not to bowl, but the Team captain declined to add the bowler. Now the rest of the team is upset because they are forced to use their team captain's blind score and make up for the 10 pin loss per game every time she decides she is not going to bowl.  

Has any one else had a similar issue?  Can the rest of the team get rid of their team captain?

She wouldn't be on my team doing that.  If she is hurt then get a sub.  Even in the easiest going of leagues you still have an obligation to perform.

As my team's captain, I prefer to bowl full strength, and will try to if I think it puts us at an advantage.  If my 205 average bowler won't be there and didn't pre-bowl, I probably won't replace him/her unless the replacement bowls about the same or better.  For me it's usually a tough call.  

My question is...If she's there, why isn't she bowling?  You deserve an answer to that for sure.  I've only shown up one time and not bowled - That was a couple of days after I had my broken elbow (non-bowling hand) repaired.  I didn't feel like fighting a cast (and drugs) that night.

Talk to the league president about getting rid of the team captain - It's the only piece of advice I can give (or find another league).

Tough one.  The USBC rules say that the captain has the franchise and has the authority to dismiss bowlers from the team.  That's Rule 104a.3 in the 07-08 rule book.  It doesn't say anything about dismissing the captain.

However, Rule 104c says:

When a team is replaced, the new team shall assume the position standings of the replaced team, unless the league ruled otherwise. A new team must be advised of the financial status of the team or individual they replaced.


As I interpret that, the team could walk out on the captain, and if the captain cannot field another team, the others could form a new team and replace the one that walked out (themselves).  They would be awarded whatever points they had already earned anyway, it isn't as though it's some new team that's given first place because the first place team quit, so I don't see that many would object.

You could also invoke Rule 115a.1.b that provides for removal of a league member for "Any deliberate action which can be proven to be detrimental to the best interest of the team."  Forcing you to take a blind or absentee score could be viewed as against the best interest of the team.

Those things are likely to create some ill will that is usually best avoided.  Have you talked to the captain about allowing this other woman to sub or join as an additional rostered team member?  You could also call the USBC to find out what the procedure is for removing the captain.  Usually you want to select a captain who is responsible enough and committed enough to be there, pay her dues, and bowl week in, week out, but sometimes that just doesn't happen.

I had a similar case last night with one bowler absent.  One guy on the team preferred to go with his blind score because it's guaranteed, I chose to go with a sub (I'm captain).  I can understand his point as the sub was new and unknown; we didn't know if he would be serious about bowling his best or if he would be penalized by the cap on handicap.  It worked out for me because he bowled pretty well.

Can't they just quit the team and form another with a new person? I seem to recall a team here doing that once.
