Bowlers Education Seminar at Gaithersburg MD
« on: February 22, 2004, 07:24:17 AM »
Thanks to Dr. Jeff Briggs, Ron "Magic Carpet" Clifton, and Dan Shore for putting together a fun and informative seminar this weekend.

Friday, Dr. Jeff gave classes on building Confidence and Lane play. In between each class he Ron and Dan worked with us on the lanes, video taping and working with us individually for about 5 hours. Dan had the lane man put down a Nabi shot which is easier than a sport shot, but tighter than a house shot and a 26' sport pattern down on the last lane, which was fun to try and figure out.

Saturday, Ron Clifton gave presentations on the Most Common Mistakes Bowlers Make, and the secrets to a perfect practice session. We were on the lanes again for about 5 hours. I got to work with Dan Shore for the first time today and I have to say I am very impressed with the way he coaches.

Sunday, Dan gave a presentation on basic fundamentals and then we spent another 3 hours on the lanes.

I equate the 3 day Seminar to Monster Garage, I wheel in my broke down bowling style and they tear it apart and turn it into something cool.

I highly recommend all 3 coaches to anyone trying to take their game to the next level.

Jim Kirkman

PS. Special thanks to Ron for making the game less fun now that I don't have to do so much work to deliver the ball. The hardest thing to do in bowling is nothing, I always want to do something to help the ball down the lane, note to self, you are not helping.

I am glad you guys had a good time and found the seminar helpful. I can¡¦t tell you how much I enjoy doing these seminars.
I get to hang out with a group of bowlers that really love the game and are hungry for knowledge. These are the greatest people on earth.
We had a lot of people there that had attended previous seminars and I must say I saw some great improvements in their games.
Attending the seminar for all three days is more than the sum if it¡¦s parts. If we (the coaches) know you are there for all three days we can give you harder more in-depth task to learn. John (the mathematician) that knocked down my Multifunctional Optimal Positioner (MOP) about 5 times on Day 2 while spinning the ball like a top was literally bowling the 2 board will 45 degrees of axis rotation and very little tilt. This all came together for him on day 3.

CoachJim is really throwing the ball well now. Toward the end of day three I started to play a little game with Jim. His task was to throw the ball into the pocket and if he didn¡¦t strike he had to tell me why. WHY did that shot leave a 10 pin. Why did that shot leave that 4 Pin and so on. He was not right every time but he is learning.  I would then tell him to change his axis rotation by 3 degrees or change his ball speed by 1 MPH and he could do it. I am telling you this guy is getting GOOD.

You and your wife are really throwing the ball well now. What a great improvement for both of you from the first seminar you attended.
You are right in that we could have used another coach on Saturday. We (the coaches) got together after the seminar ended and addressed that fact.
We will have the problem solved by the next seminar. The last thing we want to do is over book.

I may get a chance to say more later, but I have to get to work. It seems that if I am gone for 4 days that 10 days worth of work piles up. ļ

ok 1st practice day after the seminar. I worked on spare shooting today and had a great session. I was 100% on single pin conversions and I gained alot of confidence shooting the 7 and 10 with the plastic ball. I had a fun practice session today and some of my friends remarked on how low I was finishing at the line. Great investment, thanks again guys.

Ron -

Are you going to be at the next one in MD?  Dan said they like to do 2-3 a year and I'm ready for my next task!!  After only being there on Friday, I didn't bowl huge numbers this weekend, but I rolled very consistent games -- not something I'm known for!!!  Looking forward to learning a little about the release.  Again, thanks to all of you!!  I just saw what you wrote in my other post -- I hope it's not going to be 5/21-5/23 -- my honey will be in the Bahamas and I won't be able to come over those dates.....

StormWarning: Yes this seminar is in MD. The next one will be on the weekend of May 14-16. I hope you can be there, you will not be disapointed.

Nollster: It will be the weekend before the May 22. It was nice meeting you as well, I hope you can make it for the next one.

Ron thanks for the kind words I am starting to get it I think. I had to send the ball wider than what we worked on at Shadey Grove. I was able to stay behind the ball and not grab up on it like we worked on, it just took a while to get fine tuned, the ball kept wanting to come in behind the head pin, once I realized this I moved right one board, it only took me 9 frames, hopefully next time I learn a little quicker. I was able to preform under presure in the 10th frame of the last game, I needed to strike out to tie the game and I was able to do it without grabbing on it at the bottom.

Like Ron said it was fun just being around so many people with the same intrest and enthusiasm for the game as myself.

Nollster,
Yes I will be at the next one which is May 14-16 unless Dr. Briggs finds a better coach than me. He is very demanding of the quality of his coaching staff.
Try to attend more than one day if you can...you will get a lot more out of it. CoachJim is a Silver level coach and he attends all 3 days EVERY  TIME and you saw how well he throws the ball. I assume that he passes the things he learns on to his students. Hummmm, should we charge him extra for that? HEHE

Toma normally tries to do all three days too but was moving into a new house so he only got to do one day. We were all supposed to go to Toma's house for a big party but he forgot to tell us the address.
Toma throws the ball great as well.
Bowl Great!!

Ron, it is my hope that all of my students show up at the clinic so you and Dr. Jeff, can pass on the knowlege first hand. I did get 2 of them there this time, 2 out of 20 isn't bad...

I guess PChee was right "bowlers are cheap".

Another favorite quote of mine is:"Bowlers would rather spend the money on a quick fix ball, than spend it on obtaining the knowlege it takes to bowl with it, for one simple reason you don't know what you don't know", Ron Clifton. Ron usually makes this statement at some point in every clinic and it never gets old.
