Bowlers Journal
« on: June 26, 2008, 05:12:21 PM »
I wanted to start a topic to see if this magazine/journal is worth getting.  I have heard some good things about this.  Is it worth the money. Was leaning on getting it for the 3 years since it seems like the best deal.  Let me know. Thanks

In a word: YES!

BJI is the COMPLETE bowling magazine. News, Instruction, Ball Reviews, Business News, it's got it all. Of course, I'm slightly biased -- I write for the mag. But that doesn't really matter. Even if I didn't write for it, I'd still say it's hands-down the only bowling magazine that offers everything a truly involved/concerned bowler wants.

I won't bash the Bowler's Journal magazine, it is a good magazine with good article from some well respected writers. But if I only has one magazine to get, I would go with Bowling This Month. I find a bit more use from that one and a few more tips and tricks. They are both excellent mags, I just lean toward Bowling this Month. I get both and have just renewed my subscription to the Journal.

We take BJI and BTM both.  They have different sudiences.  We just fit into both.  BJI is a little more rounded with industry news.  BTM is more technical and geared to higher end bowlers.  Both magazines are very good.  There are few few other industry related magazines that are for certain people in the industry.

BTM is the bowler's magazine with great coaching article and very good ball reviews.

BJI is an industry magazine, meant for administrators and proprietors. I buy it for the ball reviews, by Joe Cerrar, and the coaching articles by Tom Kouros, and Jim Dressel's dribblings.

This might be an old topic by now, but I hardly agree with you sentiment, Charlest. BJI is NOT an "industry" magazine. Actually, if you've read the re-designed mag, it's geared very much toward the consumer segment. More instruction, more pro bowling coverage, etc... and less business news. If you want more instruction, the July issue may be up your alley...

pocket, we've spoke some bowling before, so my advice would be:  get them both.  Joe

Hey, I'm always open for adjustment. It "had been" an industry magazine. I like Kouros. I do not care for Mike McGrath's column. Some of the other coaching, I'm not crazy about. Maybe July will be better. I don't want more instruction I want good, accurate instruction.

I do subscribe and have for years because it is worth the information in it.

Fair enough. If you had some suggestions, though, what would they be? Besides McGrath...is the other coaching (as of the new re-design) accurate? If not, could you provide an example?

Coaching: I think Spigner is usually analyzing some pro's delivery. Although I guess he tries to imply how their process might be applied to anyone else's, I rarely see the connection. I don't regard myself as dim-witted, but I can't see how the pro's corrections might apply to me unless we had the same initial faults. I don't care how that pro made his release/delivery work on the PBA level.

Your suggestion is well taken. I'll pass it along to my boss (Editor Bob Johnson) when he's back in the office. For now, I offer this: Unlike months prior, for July, I did the edit on Spigner's column. I've noticed what you noticed, and tried my best to make it more "instructional." I can only work with what's given to me, though, so I couldn't change it TOO much...I have to respect the original intentions of the piece, etc., at least for now. Like I said, I will certainly offer up your suggestion when I get a chance.

Just don't be too harsh on the Tenpin Tutor, ok? I try my best with each coach I interview, and hope each article is, at the very least, entertaining. Until I give them a call, I've got no clue where the story is headed, so the quality of the article is really based on what they have to say...unlike, say, my other articles in the BJ, the quality of which is obviously reliant on the quality of my writing alone.
