Bowlers using sponges
« on: January 04, 2006, 01:46:28 AM »
Bowling in league last night we had a fairly good shot in the beginning but the bowlers were using sponges that very quickly sucked up so much of the oil it was near impossible to find a shot/

Bowlers used a Trauma Response Track Silencer, Brunswick Goliath, 2 Ebonite Big Times, Lane 1 solid Uranium,  Columbia 300 and I used a polished XXXcel.

Some were playing down and in which might not have been but two were swinging the ball.  So not only did the down and in shot that was there dry up quickly, it seemed like everything from 17 right dried up as well.  I went from the XXXcel to the Big Time pearl, threw only twice, then finished with the Pure Hammer burgundy which looked like a hook monster stoning a nine pin.

Scores took a nose dive half way through the second game and the number of splits in the third game was tremendous.

I'm sure others have had similar problems, how did you handle them?

Lane conditioning is a science, no argument there. Some guys think they know what to do and how to do it but it just isn't so.

Ah, there's the rub.  Unfortunately, with their purchases of big-ticket lane machines, many proprietors around here seem to think that they don't need to have a regular lane man on staff anymore;  all they have to do is have someone program the machine, and then a mechanic or porter can just move the thing from lane to lane and push a button.  So while the science of lane conditioning has become more complicated, the level of expertise at the centers hasn't kept pace.

One house I bowl in transitions quickly and keeps on drying up as you go. The other house is very consistent...rarely do I move more than a couple boards over the progress of three games. Both are on new synthetics. One guy understands the science. The other guy tries to please all the whiners, and in doing so, has made a mess for everyone. Lots of guys shooting one nice game followed by two games of agony.

Talking to the propriator of my local house, lanes at some places change very quickly becasue of the type and brand of lane conditioner they use. At my home house, the lanes stay fairly consistant through the set. He says he uses a certain kind of conditioner for that reason. Whether its true or not, I dont know. It is also a lighter pattern.

Humidifier... it is remarkable how patterns are less effected by properly maintained humidity in the air. And to the opposit, how not maintaining humidity can break down the oil. Most centers today dont have them and when it rains, the oil pushes around the lane faster.

LOL!  My friend gets 4 revs.  He uses a Vicious Particle at 360-grit Abralon playing down second arrow.  To battle this, I use my Desert Heat playing 5th arrow to like 5 at 40ft. and all is good ! Gotta love them sponges!

Know when to move deeper -  read the signs and the lane. Change the ball to something with more length and/or a milder coverstock. Know your equipment. Too much hesitation in a quickly changing lane environment costs wood, lots of it, since there will be so many other shots before it is your turn again. Just stay in front of your competiors who burn up the lane.
