drills/ games during practice?
« on: January 04, 2006, 11:57:03 AM »
I had a practice session a few weeks back with a couple of guys who are very good area tournament bowlers and they turned me on to a excellent game to help with spare shooting. The game was lowest score for an entire game (of course there some money involved!). For example, in the 1st frame the best you could do would be hitting the 10 pin with your 1st ball and then the 7 pin with your second ball. Perfect score for an entire game is 20. I thought the game required the upmost concentration and helped immensly. Anybody have any other practice drills/ games that helps your game?

Usually when I practice I throw 1 game like I was normally bowling.  Then the others I just work on my release, try different things and my spares since the shot I normally practice on is nothing like what Im going to see in my league or tournaments so there is really no point of just bowling for score.

Work your way right to left then back and back and forth. Focusing on hitting a specific location of each pin (left side, middle, right side). Example, hitting the left side of the 7pin, then the center of the 7pin, the the right side of the 7pin which is the left side of the 4pin... and so on accross the rack. Being able to hit each pin at will in a specific location will increase your average quite alot. Just imagine how much improved your spare percentage will increase...in addition to split conversion. To perfect this skill, you must master your release and targeting. This in turn will increase your strike and pocket percentage which in turn will reduce the amount of potential spares leaves to single pins. You can see where I am going here.

A drill that we used to do in college was playing a full game going down and in over each arrow- first through third, then work on swinging fourth arrow and as deep as fifth or sixth arrow if possible. Change around your different equipment as well so you can see what it will do during this exercise. In order to get to the pocket I'm sure you'll have to adjust not only your hand release but your ball speed to get there from the different targetting.
