Is your high back swing naturally from the free swing or do you actually pull the swing up ? What is the advantages and disadvantages of a high back swing ?

In order to get the ball higher in your back-swing than it is at the apex of your pushaway you have to impart some kind of energy into the swing...just basic physics.

i have a high backswing and very small pushaway...yea i muscle in my swing...its an issue when im working on timing too..with better timing shrinks the height of the backswing so its a work in progress

mine is basicly at shoulder height but i bend over at my waist and the back swing looks high. i actually have had to show people what i talk about by pulling my arm back to shoulder height and just bending over and going see.

advanatge... ball speed
disadvantage... ball speed

If you stood still and had a free arm swing the ball would go as high in the back swing as the starting position, but since the pivot point (shoulder) is moving forward during a normal delivery the arm swing will actually go higher (dependent on a persons physical limitations) than the start position. So the body is adding the extra energy needed to make the arm swing go higher than the start position, assuming a completely free arm swing.

It's often muscle combined with bending forward too much in the walkup.

I do it and it's one of my faults.  Lately I've been holding the ball higher in my pushaway and closer and they tell me it has been lower, freeer and the ball is moving faster down the lane.

Some nice scores some days!

for me its all about timing if it gets early then my swing will tend to get lower and if it gets later it will go higher.

I have a pretty high backswing (if I were standing straight up it'd be around shoulder high) and it is a little assisted. It's accentuated by the forward lean of the body though. I don't know that I could really speak about the pros and cons per se, it's just the way I bowl. If I'm a little rusty or out of form, I tend to lift the backswing a little too much, which I can feel in my shoulder as it becomes uncomfortable. I think I'm lucky enough that when I lift the backswing, I lift it in a straight line, if you can do this, I don't see an issue with it. There are a number of the touring pros who aren't even close to relaxed on the backswing, it's the forward swing where it's more important (in fact when I did a coaching course with him, Dick Ritger said that one of his methods for increasing speed was to push the ball in the forward swing a little (stopping before the release point))

It feels free to me. It is mostly done with leaning forward to sling shot it up there.
