Question about the Tropical Storm
« on: July 20, 2008, 06:13:55 AM »
Hi. I've been bowling for a year with this ball now (3 fingers) and my hook on this ball is very low. Is it the ball or is it just me?

3 fingers? I presume you mean you use 2 fingers and your thumb like 90%+ of the rest of the bowlers out there.

It could be a combination of your style, the balls layout and the lane pattern, or lack there of.

If you're a beginner the pro shop may have just laid this ball out with a basic label leverage layout.  For my style most balls that are laid out label leverage really don't work on a wide variety of patterns and don't cover a lot of boards either.

I had mine laid out like J-Mac mentioned, and it hooked a nice amount on the right condition.  Any type of heavier oil, it was a roller skate, but medium-medium light it would turn hard.

Unless you're close to a cranker, that ball will not handle TRUE medium oil.

It is a light to maybe medium-light oil ball, but you better hit some serious dry to get it to make the turn.

If your house oils lanes on the drier side, AND if you have true average revs and average ball speed, this ball should work fine. If your house uses oil closer to TRUE medium and if you have "mixed handicap league average revs", you will need a lot stronger ball to make it hook more.

This ball is good for drier lanes or as a beginner's ball for light oil.

I have been doing some research on medium oil balls this afternoon and I was wondering what do you guys recommend?

Storm?

The Street Rod solid or the Thunderstruck solid seem good partners to the Tropical Storm.

Tropical Storm is pretty underated if you ask me.  It is definately not a dry lane ball.  It was my go to ball in all my leagues for a while, until it cracked.

Edit:  If you're looking for something cheap, for medium oil, look at the Pluto from Roto Grip....

OK, the Tropical Storm is an oiler, just like the Pluto, that BTM also says is an oiler.

I just bowled on a very wet and sloppy shot.

Even my strong Awesome Revs was straining a little to get flush(I can move wide quickly and point and don't hesitate to do so!).

Took the tropical out drilled 4 1/4 X 5.  Week before had used it on pavement with a broken back wrist.

Cupped and threw 9 to 3 and the booming but late moving backend (that I didn't have with my stronger stuff....amazed me.  It was quite late, very vicious and a high risk shot but the backend exceeded everything else!

Note....I've used a battle zone bullets in tournies and pointed where all my lefty opponents were using Swamp monsters, Monster Brimstones and Brunswick ProZone Azure and placed very well in the past!  I match backend on oil and can slow down....a lot!  Where I'm from a frequent tournie game of proprietors was called FTL!  I learned my throwers version to play back!

I'm just stating if friction can be found this .35 diff strong and marvelous coverstock ball can HOOK!  I found the friction on this sloppy pattern!

REgards,

Luckylefty

My Tropical skates on oil, but hooks like a mother once it hits the dry. Label 1:30 drill (pin 3.5" from PAP, CG near grip center).
