Just wondering for all the folks that have shot a 300.
How many strikes in before you start thinking you can shoot 300?
I would like to say if I had the first eight I would start thinking about the possibility.
I know we should just take one shot at a time, but I tend to think too far ahead.
Funny, I’ve started with more in a row, but the only two times I’ve shot 300, for some
reason I started thinking about shooting 300 after the first four.
Thanks

Usually try to not think about it, but by frame 7 its on!!

It has changed over time.
Until I got one and then probably a couple after that I would take notice after 7 or 8 and start getting nervous.
Now I don't really think about it until at least 9 and generally not until the 10th frame.
The biggest mistake I see bowlers make is to try a throw 3 strikes in the 10th on the first ball. They really try to get on it and crush the pins.
I try to forget the moment and think that all I need is to strike out in the 10th like I've done a 1000 times before. The first 9 is over, all you need is a turkey in the 10th.
Recreate the feel of the previous shots and if it is meant to be it will happen.

If I have a great look on the lanes AND the ball is going through the pins as expected, it's still not until the 9th frame before I let my brain wander.
Also, for about the last dozen 300s, when I get to that 12th ball I like to tell myself "leave a 10 pin" because then I stay relaxed and just hit the pocket. Too many try to do something extra good on the last ball "so it carries", but they hadn't done it the whole game...

When I strike in the first frame
-
I don't think about it at all. I just try to stay relaxed and focus on throwing a good shot. If it's in the cards then you will get it.

Its different every time. Depends on the circumstances, and what kind if look I have. Second one I shot about 40 years ago was in the step ladder finals of a big local tourney. My opponent was matching me strike for strike except for a solid 8 he left during the game. I literally never thought about anything but winning till after the first strike in the tenth to lock the mstch. Last one I shot a couple of months ago, exact opposite. I shot a 140 in the first game on a pattern I normally love. Went to the next pair, made 4 good shots out of the gate, and immediately thought I could go off the sheet with the reaction I was getting. I have probably thought about shooting 300 that early, but can't remember ever doing it before.

When I strike in the first frame
How many hundreds of times have I lost my perfect game bid in the second frame ;)

I'm in the boat of "try not to think about it", or more importantly, "think about something else."
My first was the biggest example. I shot it in the middle of a tornado warning. Seriously. Weatherman interrupted a baseball game in the middle of summer leagues to issue a tornado warning during the middle stages of our second game. 6 frames in, and I wasn't really thinking about it, as I was throwing my shot, looking at the TV, and then outside at those playing sand volleyball while seeing the clouds rolling in. wash/rinse/repeat for the 7th - 9th.
By the time the 10th frame came up, we could see wall clouds in the distance. I threw my 10th, went back to the door and looked again. took about 30 seconds, threw the 11th. Looked one more time as the sand volleyball players started wrapping up, then threw my 12th. In all honesty, I didn't realize I had done it because my mind was completely on something else.
Funnily enough, this was a 4-game block for league, and I ended up going back 6, next 12, then front 6 before leaving a stone 9-pin. If I had strung them together when needed, a back-to-back would have been sweet.
But each time I've shot 300, I've tried my hardest to get my mind off of it, because I already tend to overthink anyway. The less I think about it, the more focused I would be. Analysis Paralysis sucks.

When I strike in the 1st frame, I use a quote from a good friend of mine. She said, 'You're tied for the highest start in the history of bowling."
it keeps me on an even level until about the 9th frame.
-
I start thinking about it after 10. Before that, I'm sure I'm about to leave something.
-
After about the 6th frame is when it becomes an idea, but definitely the 10th frame is when it sets in. The first one I bowled, I came close so many times before and literally did not care, which is probably the reason why that was my first one!

After 5 in a row, I think about it. If I get the 7th, I have full confidence that I can get the job done. That frame usually stops my string whether I didn't commit to the concept I was following, missed a move, or didn't carry. Lately, it has been hard for me to get the job done because it feels like it has been too long since I was able to throw the last ball without feeling nervous. Hopefully I can pick up some tips from you guys!

Its really no different than needing to strike out the last frame to win a tournament. In fact I would argue that the latter is more stressful. The funny thing is I have made great sots under pressure, and I have chocked. You never know. I have made great shots with thousands on the line, and have chocked in a 10$ pot game. My guess is that any bowler, no matter how good, who says different is fibbing

If I'm on a hot streak and bowling well, I think I have a chance every game until I miss or don't carry.
When I'm in a slump, I don't think I'm going to bowl another 300, ever...

I've had them when I didn't realize I had all of them until the 10th, and I've had them where you count them from frame one because it just feels right that night. My last one was with a pitch Black after I started the night with a 148 game and shot 700 still.

A few weeks back, a woman in a league that I bowl in as a sub shot 181-122-300 for 603 without a 200 game. That's tough to do but 700 with a 148 is impressive.
