Bowling Accessory Design Invention/Idea
« on: December 12, 2008, 03:15:51 AM »
This will blow your mind so get ready.  If you are like me, you would like to be able to know more about your bowling so you can fix stuff and actually know precisely what you are changing and what you are not.  What I propose to be invented will cure all these things and should be financially in range of any serious bowler who already spends money on leagues, tournaments, and equipment.

My invention: Bowling Ball Measuring Device

What Does It Do: It measures your ball speed, rev rate, accuracy, and angle of rotation!

Where Does It Go: It is placed at the foul line in an area parallel to the pit but away from where you end your approach.

How Big Is It: It can be the size of a GPS device that has either a tripod or suction platform for secured placement:

How Does It Do It:  By placing the targeting system towards the pins and using existing technology of radar (mostly used by the police), and using technology already in place in current bowling alleys that measure speed already, it measures the change in distance away from the device.  It also measures the the rotation by having you the bowler place a coin sized metallic sticker on the ball.  In the field of play it can measure your initial revs by measuring the speed which this sticker revolves around the ball.  Also using this sticker, the angle of rotation is measured.

To measure the accuracy, the ball will show up in the given view finder as to where it rolled over down the lane.  It can either do this through recording or through graphical means.

How much does it Cost: $300-400 initially with decreased cost over time.

Also, my invention is not completely revolutionary as it mostly combines current technology to use for bowling.  Use your head next time and think for a change.

Sounds like a good coaching tool to me. For the everyday bowler the trick is learning how to change the various components that your device would measure. It seems like it uses existing technology. This device might work in other sports as well like baseball (pitching), football (quarterback), etc.

So here's a question?  How can you patent something that's already being used in golf?

The key is that it is being used in golf but not yet in bowling as far as I know.  Can the one in golf be used on a bowling ball?

Easy, he has ties to the Patent office you idiot.  Do your research, this is a very important man who we're dealing with (who cannot make a tenpin).

Yeah I forgot making a tenpin is one of the tests important groups of people give to others to calculate their value.  LOL!

The last known patent I could find on this was in the 1960's LOL:

http://www.wipo.int/pctdb/en/wo.jsp?IA=WO1983002161&DISPLAY=DESC

With today's technology I am willing to bet we can develop something pocket-sized and would improve your game far faster than any new bowling ball could.  I am going to do more research this weekend.  Bowling is an untapped market outside of bowling balls themselves.

Necro,
My only question is this: How do you fit your head into a bowling alley?

Ive never seen someone think so highly of themselves while providing so little information or usefulness. It would be laughable if it wasn't so pathetic.

From an engineering standpoint, how is this better or worse than a standard video camera at the same cost?

Does a video camera measure the revs and angle?  I guess you can use it to calculate speed but then it wouldn't really be automatic.

You look at the ball as it is rolling down the lane put tape on your grip center and you can tell your tilt by how it changes

Exactly how will your wonder device be helpful with one's mechanics and help to improve consistency, accuracy, and the ability to properly read lanes?

There's nothing better than good old fashioned hard work in order to achieve a high level, at anything us humans so endeavor to do, which, of course, includes bowling.

I for one, pay no attention whatsoever to the stats revealed by current scoring systems, such as speed and what-not, since I'm more interested in performance than with trying to impress others with speed and revs, which I have plenty of, as do the high majority of serious bowlers.

Gimmicks may show fun stats to look at, but they don't do much in the way of improvement.

A device that shows exact values so there is no guessing would prove more useful in my opinion.  It is the same as lifting weights or bodybuilding.  Going into the gym and just lifting weights will get you only so far.  When you are recording everything down from lifts to what you eat, you will rarely plateau and never not understand why you are where you are.

I think if something helped that would improve consistency, the high scores will only be a result of that consistency.  You can be a high average bowler and be inconsistent, but it is hard to be consistent and not be a high average bowler.

BowlersMAP and DigiTrax

Just not at the $300-$400 price tag.
